Question

Dolby AC3 (2000) and XVid codecs won't work together

Asked by: ahammar

I have some AVI files that I can hear the sound, but there is no video.  I have to install the XVid (XVid4 I think) codec to view the video.  Ok that's fine.
I also have some AVI files that I can see the picture but no sound.   I have to install the Dolby AC3 (2000) codec, then that file works fine.

The problem is...after I install the Dolby AC3 (2000) codec, then the AVI files that required the XVid codec stop working.  They will open, but will not play sound or video.  It is just stuck on the first frame I guess because it does show the start of the video, but it i froze at that point.

So I had to uninstall both codecs to get back to square 1, then install the codec that I need depending on which file I want to watch.  I can only have 1 installed at a time.

Anyone know why I can't have both of these codecs installed at the same time.  This is true for 2 different computers, one with Media player 10 and one with media player 11.

Thanks!

:-)

Hi the media player coudl be your problem,
try another player, install this  divx player that should  add the codecs you need
http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/
If your sound card is very old no amount of players will fix this unless there is some updated drivers for your video and sound card.
Could you provide your system specs.

I do have an old PCI sound card.  I put it in on purpose because I needed the joystick port for my midi instrument.  Maybe that is what is doing it.  It is an Avance by Avance Logic.  The driver is als4000.sys
I have xp with sp2.
Does that tell you any more?

Thanks very much!  Maybe that is the culprit.  I hadn't thought of that.

ok thanks, was there any problems prior to inserting the Avance logic?

a couple of things you can do test out what is the problem
Have a look in system devices openVIEW and show hidden devices look for any problems tat may have been hidden.
USe yoru dxdiag go to start run type in dxdiag press enter then run the audio tests the diagnostic will you inform you if there is any problems with your sound card.

in control panel sounds and audio >>Audio>
sound playback points to  default sound card
sound recording points to default  sound card
and MIDI music playback
points to default device Micrososft GS Wavetable SW Synth

here is a small tool called G Spot it dont confuse the name lol, its a codec checker, install it and run it add one of your avi files and it will tell you if the problem is the file and if your missing something.
