Capture from MiniDV/firewire, almost no preview, almost every frame dropped

I'm trying to capture from a MiniDV camera over firewire on an acer Travelmate 5520 laptop.

The camera connects and windows recognizes it, it shows up in My Computer.  But when I try to watch it (not even capturing) on my computer, I get a black frame or maybe the first frame but it just sticks while the video continues playing on the camera's LCD.

I've tried Sony Video Capture 6, Windows Capture, and the preview under My Computer (probably WC)

Both devices are plugged in (to the wall), and both CPU cores are at idle usage (0-20%), the swap file increases up by 40Mb or so when I'm trying to capture.

I have ffdshow codec pack, but I doubt codecs are the issue.
