The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Transferring VHS to DVD - Need help with some quirks

I have a pretty good-sized collection of VHS tapes I'd like to burn to DVD before the tapes begin to head for that big tape player in the sky.

The setup:

I have a good VHS player hooked up to a Plextor Convert X, which came with a copy of InterVideo's WinCreator 2.0 that converts the analog video to digital video and saves it to my hard drive.

Two problems have cropped up.

(1) An output file is saved as MPG. When I burn it to DVD, it will play on my computer but not on my DVD player. Note that this is an ordinary 2 or 3 year old DVD player hooked up to my living room TV. Do I need to use another program to convert that MPG file to another format.....what format....and is there a program (preferably freeware, of course, but not a requirement) that does this that is easy to use? (Think: this guy is a " highly advanced beginner," not an expert!)

(2) I've got some tapes that run over 2 hrs. One  is about three and a half. I thought that I could convert it as described above and then use the program DVD Shrink to compress it to fit on one standard 4.7GB DVD disk, but it looks like DVD Shrink will only work with DVDs and not with video files on hard disk. Is this right? And if so, is there any other way to accomplish this compression? And if this can be done, should it be done before or after the conversion I ask about in step 1?

I would ask that all experts who reply NOT suggest as a solution any software from Roxio, Magix, or Nero. I have tried their products in the past and am not a fan of any of them.
