Question

joining .001 files

Asked by: gem56

hey guys,

i've downloaded a xvid .avi file thats been split into .001 .002... ect. previously i've been using HJSplit to join these types of files together, however for some reason when i try and join this file (and this has also happened for files in the past aswell), it becomes corrupt and unable to be watched.

the joint .avi file is the correct size, however when i try to play it with media player classic or vlc, i only get whatever video was on the first .001 and then the video just stops.

like i say this has happened to me in the past as well...i recall merging proper .avi's together and somehow the end result was unwatchable. the links i have downloaded from are good, ive tried redownloading, still doesnt work.

anyone have any ideas and suggestions?
thanks

.001 .002
were these RAR zipped together?
RAR videos zipped togther you download them and get a folder of like 20 or more of these then starting with .001 r/click it and extract here using winrar
Winrar will extract the lot to one video
I use Ht joiner splitter but it it wont join these lets find out what they are if not an RAR file
Gspot
Establishes what video and audio codecs are required to play any video.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?toolsearch=Gspot&convert=&s=&orderby=Name&hits=50
Post back the results please, use the attach file below
with a snapshot of the Gspot inteface after you drop .001 on
then hit VID 1 under Proposed codecs and solutions at the bottom

hi Merete, thanks for your reply.

100% they're not rar's, by the looks of it they've been split with some HJSplit type program. the first file (.001) can be played with media player classic or VLC no problems, however the rest seem to be an unknown format. i double checked opening with winrar, unknown achieve. the files themselves were NOT apart of a previous archive, ie they were just downloaded as is.

screenshot attached.

cheers :)

Use HJSplit to combine the file :)

Cheers

gspot reports the file is trucated ie useless because it's missing 628 megs
The file is not complete. Makes sense
Did you get a bin / cue with these?
Xvid ISO mpeg4 nice quality
Since it's an ISO image maybe you have to put them all into the same folder and burn to a disc,
what I'd do
ISO is an image which can be mounted in a virtual drive
mount them in daemon tools and copy the image out/
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Daemon_Tools
How to Mount or Watch .ISO Image Files with DAEMON Tools
http://www.digital-digest.com/articles/mount_watch_iso_files_page1.html
Once you copy them out they'll be in the format Xvid mpeg4, Vlc will support them
or use a free divx player
http://www.divx.com/en/win
Then you can join them if the joiner supports mpeg4 Xvid format
 that should solve it
cheers

hello Merete, thanks again for your reply.

for whats its worth i joint all the files together and dropped it into Gspot again. the 8 files (.001-.008) were all there was to download. there no were bin's/cue's or any other files.

once combined, the file useless. im familiar with ISO's, images, mounting, and virtual drives. i usually use winrar, ultraiso and alcohol to deal with said files. unfortunately non of all the above can open this 728mb pile of crap.

ive attached the gspot screenshot below just in case if theres something new that you can see that i can try...if not, i'll just close this thread and try something else.

much appreciated for the help :)

No worries gem56, win some lose some. I recon the files are corrupted. Incomplete
How did you manage to join them if they are corrupted.
Downloaded files off P2P if that is what you used may not be 100% complete.
I'd check the host site for any comments from others who have downloaded this particular video.
They may warn files not playable
Often times you have downloaded 100% of the file but the file is not 100% in itself.
Understand?
Try the virtual drive / Alcohole
Gspot does state it's missing pieces.
FairUse Wizard was used to rip a DVD it seems/ that again may point to missing bits if the rip was off the new copyright DVD. They are designed not to be ripped.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/FairUse_Wizard
Can't say I can think of anything else.
Mount one of the .001 at a time onto the virtual drive copy out then add another and so on
if that fails
I'd give up on this.
Good Luck, would love to know if you resolve it
