The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Help with playing back HDV 1080i60 vidoes

Tags: Apple, QuickTime Pro, 7.4.5
How do I play back .mov files in the HDV 1080i60 format?

When I try to play such files, all I get is a white screen (with audio).

An example of such a file:

http://www.stephenschleicher.com/?cat=19
(download the Wheat 02 file)

My setup:

Powerbook G4 with 1.25 Ghz G4 processor and 2 GB ram
Quicktime Pro Version 7.4.5

Any idea what could be going wrong?

I tried importing the file into iMovie HD 6.0.3 and also couldn't get it to work. The same thing happened - white screen with audio.

I also tried to import it into Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 and got a "File Error" "(1 files recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown)".

Any tips would be very helpful........

Thank you,

You must be missing some dvd codecs.
Codec: QuickTime (HDV 1080i60 codec- Very Important)
Is this a MAc windows? Since your using Imovie?

I donot have imovie have quicktime version 7 and am running windowsxp sp2,
I do have a lot of codecs though, as in mdi aplayers etc
I downloaded your link and it opens on my system with Nero showtime player, so on that note you need a DVD player such Power DVD Win DVD or nero showtime player

Drop it onto Gspot to test if you have the right codecs installed. How much ram do you have?

Hey I'm using a MAC Powerbook G4 with OS 10.4. So windows doesn't help.
I found out that a bunch of Quicktime plug-ins that my friend had were not installed on my machine, and I installed them and that worked. I think the folder labeled AppleHDVCodec.component was key - I stuck it into the QuickTime library folder within the root director. I'm guessing that Codec came with the latest ver of Final Cut Pro which I don't have yet.

I realize that windows doesnt help you it was a reference/ comparison aspect only.
Still I resolved your problem by suggesting you get the right codecs right?

are you sure you've got enough 'umph' on that mac?

hd files are quite a strain on cpu's, and if you're running anything else at the same time, or in the background then you might have problems.

i'm pc based, but have occassionally had to produce qt movies, but when it comes to hd, i find a lot of mac's incapable of playing back 'full res' hd .mov files.

i note 'Codec: QuickTime (HDV 1080i60 codec- Very Important)' - have you any idea what 'very important means?

good luck

ps. played back happily on my pc....

Yeah I object
mattcintosh asked for more details and helped by suggesting he install Codec: QuickTime (HDV 1080i60 codec- Very Important)
Seems to have pointed him in the right direction and that solved it for him.

As a newbie here i'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how this all works. Merete, your comment about missing codecs was good but not specific enough. I'd happily award you some points for that, but again, more specificity was needed (notice that my solution contained a filename). Yours was speculative and contained nothing that would help me figure out what exactly I was missing.
