The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

ASP/VB.NET Check if File exists
Tags: file, check, exists
I'm just beginning with .NET, obviously, and can't find what must be very simple..... Checking if a file exists.  I don't know what namespace I need open and I can't figure out what function will get me there.  I also would love to get the name of the server.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Namespace required:  System.IO

Imports System.IO

Then, you can use the shared Exists() method to look for a specific file. With
the File class, you pass in the path as a string, like so:

If File.Exists("c:\myfile.txt") Then
'do something
Else
'do something
End If

or

this procedure with the FileInfo class. This time we need to
explicitly create the class instance, as seen here:

Dim MyFile As New FileInfo("c:\myfile.txt")
If MyFile.Exists() Then
'do something
Else
'do something
End If

This time, the Exists() method didn't require the filename as a parameter
because the object itself points to the appropriate file.

Accepted Solution

Thanks guys.  This is helpful.  I'm not sure why I couldn't find anything good.

Hi I'm using the file.exists method to check if a file is there which works fine on my local drive but fails on a network drive.

Is this a security issue and if so how would I solve it?

06.19.2005 at 11:13PM PDT, ID: 14254534
iboutchkine answer is right.... but doesn't work for a network drive...

Anybody found a solution for kennethscff ?
I am sitting with the same problem....

Eg: File.exists("\\MyServer\MyShare\MyTestFile.txt")
Always returns false...

Even using the FileInfo class, I get the same result

Okay...

BUG:
Theortically, when calling a Network File, the Exists() method should return a Security ACCESS error ~ this should be documented as a .NET bug

REASON:
ASPNET accounts usually dont get setup with network rights.

SOLUTION:
1. Make sure your ASPNET account has permissions on your network!
