A Good Java IDE

Hi,
I'm new to the Java language, but not object oriented programming. I've been programming C++ for 18 months using the MSVC++6 IDE. I'm look ing for a good Java IDE that supports the functionality of the Java SDK version 1.3. If at all possible it would be nice to have something that's similar to MSVC++6. I'm on a tight budget so something under $100 would be great.

As I said, I'm new to Java, but I heard something that some IDEs can be upgraded work with new Java SDK versions, (something like: with some versions you can upgrade the core of the IDE by downloading something from the internet)

I want to use an IDE not only because I'm familiar with that form of development but because I can't stand using the command-line to compile programs. (It's also nice to have everything there in one program)

If you have any reccomendations please let me know.

Thanks,
j_morgan

IBM's Visual Age for Java, Professional Edition. It's slightly outside your price range (US $150), but has an extremely well-designed IDE and bells and whistles that make refactoring code a breeze. Also has free add-ons available that allow you to run Tomcat from within VAJ (no more System.out.println 's to debug servlets) and integrate with JUnit.

Thanks for the advice but next time let others post their suggestions too.
Hi j_morgan,

Most of the IDE's have free trial versions.  I would recomend downloading and testing them out first.  Nothing worse than hating your new purchase from day one.

I also like visual age for java.

JDeveloper is at http://otn.oracle.com/software/ (select JDeveloper from the drop down list).

VisualAge is at http://www-4.ibm.com/software/ad/vajava/download.htm

JBuilder is at http://www.inprise.com/jbuilder/foundation/windows.html

Matt

forte for java from java.sun.com has impressive features but its a bit heavy on computer..+ point is that its free.
and i guess u cant find better than that in the free-lot..
even better than some comercial products afterall its from SUN.( though originaly it was from some other company sun bought it and modified it to distribute it as free)

heard of IBM visual age as one of the most used IDE's ,, but as u know it will be heavy on ur pocket,
equally popular and expensive is Symantec's Visual java

there is one IDE from Metrowerks' ( of Codewarrior fame).
that should not cost much,
there is from microsoft also ( VisualJ++) i wont recommend that.

u can find more on this at developers.com->JAva->IDE's
Sun's Fortue
VisualAge is not the most used IDE by far. JBuilder has a larger installed base than all other IDEs combined (all taken across versions).

Big disadvantages of VAJ are stability and the use of a code repository (preventing you from easily editing using another editor).
jwentig,

An aside, but what stability problems have you had with VisualAge?

Matt
So what's better: Forte or JBuilder? Is JBuilder worth the extra money if Forte is free?
I personally like JBuilder.  I have tried VAJ, Visual Cafe and TogetherSoft and ended up liking JBuilder the best.

IMO a refund is not in order. If any question that's left open after getting this many answers gets a refund it becomes too appealing just to not give the points so you get a freebie...

I've since come to like Eclipse, which is maturing rapidly.
