Anyone experienced this before?

I'm having problems with my VM crashing.  This happens when I view certain webpages that require java.  The java console will show up, and then a couple seconds later Internet Explorer will crash.  A text file named hs_err_pidxxx.log is then created on my desktop with error information.  This does not happen every time I view a java webpage, rather it seems to happen most of the time when I view something that requires java from msn.com

I tried updating my VM from 1.4.2_-1 to 1.4.2_03, but the problem persists.

Below is the contents of the error log:

what url?
looks like a vm bug but can't find any reference to it.
have you tried running with MS VM?
someone else with same problem though no solution:
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=37&thread=487075

you running XP?
Hello Friend;

Try 1st doing a system restore on your windows xp.
Pick a date which did not give you any problems. After that try browsing that net, it might solve the problem.

If did not worked try system restore again and pick a date which you havent install
jre(java runtime environment) yet. Then reinstall the latest jre that you have and check it out.

Let me know if you have any questions :)

Hope it helps . . .
Friend : Javatm
If it still occurs, check may you have a MSJVM on your machine and may be this
causes the problem. If you do not have MSJVM and still did not solved
the issue then try doing a repair or reinstall on your os.

Friend : Javatm
Probably worth reporting to Sun.

yes, SP1

Doing a system restore is not an option for me right now

> If all of the solutions that I gave you did not worked.
> I then do a reinstall of Windows XP.
you can also reinstall 1.4.2_-1
it's easier than reinstalling Windows
except if you absolutely need to use 1.4.2_03 for some reason... do you?
I don't need 1.4.2_03 for any particular reason, I just thought upgrading might fix the problem.
> Doing a system restore is not an option for me right now

Why do you have a problem before about system restore ?
Okey here are the things that you may do - Technician Online (Based Theory).

1. Try creating a user new user profile under user accounts(Control Panel).
Log-off and Log-on to the new account check if the problem occurs there.

2. If it occurs there then your user profile is curropted or busted.

3. Did not worked ? Clear the start-up varibles of msconfig, click start & run.
Then type-in msconfig, go to start-up tab. The click disable all.

4. Restart the computer and check if the problem still occurs.

5. Still did not worked ? Uninstall all JVM and uninstall and reinstall IE.
Go to Add/Remove Programs, the Add/Remove Windows Components.

6. Browse and look for IE the uncheck it and press okey. Restart your machine
and put a check to it again to reinstall it then try if the problem still occurs.

7. Still did not worked ? Very compicated :( already done everything. There's
still a solution, reinstall Windows XP.

Just to let you know :
The link do worked on me (MSJVM) because I'm at work.

I guess thats it. Good luck . . .

OK, I'm going to try uninstalling the VMs and starting over.  If that doesn't work, maybe i'll just go ahead and reinstall XP.  It's been about 6 months since ive done this, and that is a long time for microsoft ;)
> Possibly an XP related bug

Good Catch . . .
True :) thats why I include several windows xp solutions.

I installed firebird, and dont seem to be having any problems.  I'm going to reinstall IE to see if that fixes anything.
> I'm going to reinstall IE to see if that fixes anything.

If it did not solve the problem on IE, try opening up IE go to tools menu
internet options, click clear history, click clear cookies and click delete
files, close IE.

This is what I do to  delete any temporary files.
Just an ordinary maintenance to IE.

Cool.
If you want the java plugin 1.4.2 to work in firebird, you need to import this registry key:
http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/resources/firebird-jre142-fix.reg
Details of installation here: http://texturizer.net/firebird/faq.html#q2.2

Well I've reported the bug.  For now I'm going to use another browser until I can get around to reinstalling the system.  Thanks for all the input, I'm going to share the points around to everyone that contributed.
Thanks for the points, let us know what Sun's response is once they get around to looking at it.
Thanks for the points, lwinkenb :-)

Friend: Javatm
According to other newsgroups that I see around the internet, this issue happens when you have multiple JVM versions installed.  Here's the method I used to determine if I had mutliple versions installed on XP.  You can probably translate these instructions to your own OS.

Start->Control Panel->Java->Java->Applet Runtime Settings-View
and
Start->Control Panel->Java->Java->JNLP Runtime Settings-View

If you see more than one JVM enabled there, you should disable or
uninstall
the version(s) that you don't want to use.  That appeared to fix the
problem
for the people in the newsgroups complaining about it.  Evidently
multiple
installations interfere w/ each other as there were some defects in the
Sun
JVM installation programs that left remnants of older versions still
installed and enabled.  The intent was to let Java developers switch
around
between different versions, but I guess there were some bugs in Sun's
installer code.

Here's a link to some of the newsgroups complaining about this.

hello everyone,

Today was an horrible day for me. I face this problem they are describing above. Actually my problem was even more difficult but I was able to figure this one for the sake of all of us.
I know this is old, but if I am facing this today perhaps it will help somebody else.
The problem in a little more detail.
1) it only happens (to me at least), when using Microsoft Outlook.
2) when opening a webpage that uses java code it give an exception and creates the file in the desktop.

I was able to solve it, just going to Control Panel/java plug-in/browser and unselect IE.

  hope this can help ;)

Thanks Fernando, but that's not really a good solution because most of us want to have Sun java (jvm) running under IE because Microsoft is no longer providing a MS-JVM.  We want/need a jvm to see content, graphs, games, etc that run under java.

I'd like to suggest (recommend) that you open a complaint at java.com and specify your environment so that Sun will fix the issue.  You'll want to include your usual, OS version, IE version, Outlook version, Sun JVM version(s) installed, what java page you went to, and anything else that you can think of.  If we don't complain, they'll never fix it.

Here's the link to use:  http://bugs.sun.com/services/bugreport/index.jsp

Thanks,
Dave
