The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Perl Scrip, execute a command
Tags: perl, execute, command
I have a perl script running on a solaris 9 box that if a mail queue hits 5000 a alarm goes off and send out a e-mail and text page.

What i want to do is when this number is detected I want it to run a command then sleep for 5 minutes
however I haven't been able to get the commands and sleep to work, i'm sure it's not that hard to do
but not working for me.

Her is the bottom part of the script, commented out is the last 3 lines that I need to get to work.

Thanks,

You're mixing two ways of executing external programs, the backticks and the system () function.
The backticks return the output of the external program to perl, which than tries to run it via the system() function.

You'll have to decide what do you want.
If you only want to run the programs run it like:
system '/opt/iplanet/ms5/mail/imsimta stop dispatcher';

or

system "/opt/iplanet/ms5/mail/imsimta stop dispatcher";

(it's either single quotes or double quotes. NOT backticks).

If you do want to run the programs and have the output use the backticks, but without system:
`/opt/iplanet/ms5/mail/imsimta stop dispatcher`;

what i ment was I want to run the first command then wait for 5 minutes and run the second command to restart the dispatcher.

#  system `/opt/iplanet/ms5/mail/imsimta stop dispatcher`;
#  sleep 300:
#  system `/opt/iplanet/ms5/mail/imsimta start dispatcher`;

}

For learning:
"Learning Perl 3rd edition" and "Learning Perl Objects, References and Modules", both of them of O'Reilly.

For great recipes for Perl
"Perl Cookbook 2nd edition" (O'reilly) and "Effective Perl" (Addison-wesley", avaliable partially at http://www.effectiveperl.com/toc.html)
