----ATTENTION EXPERTS (VB)----

As many of you know there has been an influx of new users on the site since the PAQ questions were released on google. For this reason many topic areas have been flooded with questions that are too many for us moderators and staff to handle alone.

With the help of few experts we are able to keep some of the topic areas running pretty smoothly but some such as this one are being overrun with questions that have never been closed. We are requesting that any experts who have a few moments a day will help us with a cleanup effort to clean out the abandoned questions in this topic area.

With approximately 10 experts cleaning 20 questions a day we can have this area cleaned in just a few weeks. Is there anyone willing to roll up their sleeves and give us a helping hand to cleanup this topic area?

Many of us know the benefits that Experts-Exchange has brought to us in the past. Now let's see if we can do something to help this wonderful site so it will have a future. All we need is a handful of experts to participate. We need experts who want to help and are not afraid to make decisions on their own.

If you have a few minutes a day and are willing to help out get this topic area back in order, please respond to this question and let us know. We truly will appreciate any help. For more information regarding the cleanup process please see this link:

https://www.experts-exchange.com/help/cleanup.jsp

Before you begin I will need to assign you to an area to work in. So post here first.

I will leave this question open for a few days before I begin assigning ranges.

Thank you for your time!

I've tried a couple times to volunteer before and was hoping for an assigned range....

Sometimes the requests would just suggest "Start at the oldest work forward", but then you get toe-stepping going on, so some blocks of Qs were assigned out to various people.  Then around that time DanRollins came along with his automated tools to sweep up no-comment ones, duplicates, etc, and it seems the guidelines changed a bit and there was some uncertainty amonst volunteerers and admins about what to do, especially given how effective they were at list generating, but if we post a message in a dead question, his tools can't work on them...

None the less, assuming you will try assigning ranges, I'm ready to try again.  If you cut them up like cake, please just give me a small slice to start with...

However, perhaps some guidance is in order to be CleanupPing friendly...  I've also seen some snipits around that the revamped site has been harsh on some autotools, so some clarification on whatever automated systems are/will be running in addition to CleanupPing (if there are others) would be good too.

My area: VB main, definitely - should be able to make a good call on ~75%.  VB Controls, pretty shakey, won't be able to assess to many; VB DB - no way

already starting to be...
looking forward to making a difference

Hi,

I would like to help also, I was in the same boat with GPrentice00, only I got lost on the points for ...
Could you also post how to list the clean-up post, I was posting 2 ways one was for easy access for mod's the other was just for viewing, but I think that has changed with the rewrite not sure.

DigitalXtreme, that clears it up thanks.

looking forward to helping out!

I am active in VB cleanup, usually posting about 250 recommendations per week.

My current working list includes the 2000 open Questions between March 15, 2003 and 1,000,000 BC.   Please assign date ranges that are more recent than that.

CleanupPing posted a WakupPing to that same group and I'd like to do the followup -- I intend to ruthlessly recommend delete if no Expert objected to the CleanupPing posts that look like this:
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
goofball34:
This old question needs to be finalized -- accept an answer, split points, or get a refund.  For information on your options, please click here-> http:/help/closing.jsp#1
Experts: Post your closing recommendations!  Who deserves points here?
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I recommend that if a CV comes across such a CleanupPing post and no expert has commented, then recommend DELETE -- unless you can see clear PAQ value.  We need to stop polluting the PAQ with unanswered and partially-answered questions.  If an Expert has not expressed interest after that post and if the Asker did not deign to comment, then IMHO, it is time to blow them both away.

Working ............................
might get to take a bite out of it later tonight, but should have a good chunk of weekend time and monday night to go at it.

Thanks DX

Gerry
DX - done my block, about 10% I couldn't get a sense of what action to take, there are comments, there are working answers maybe, there are "that works but I more specifically need" with some unclear posts after that  which I could not evaluate.  With ~50% being nocomment except for cleanupping, it goes by pretty quickly.

I'll certainly take some more.

sounds good -- I made a program with a browser window and a bunch of command buttons, so I only have to press the button (and, specify an expert name if needed) to generate the message and log the action in a file.  I'll just add a new button to pop a message like Coboldinosaur's for the remaining 10% and log them separately --- compliment the two methods.

I've been following behind CleanupPing's 'Wakeup' posts and I've found that it takes about HALF the time.    It's like COBOLdino's two-pass thechnique, but with the first pass being automated.

It makes the recommendations much more easy if you know that the contributing experts care so little about their investment that they didn't bother posting.   And also, I'm finding that maybe 10% of the questions have a recommendation already, so the pressure's off.    Basically 75% of the Qs become non-brainers recommendation-wise.

I was working with SpideyMod on the CleanupPing targets. but I see he's hanging up his Moderator spurs.   If we could get some CV coordination here, CleanupPing could plow through a lot of old questions with a small-footprint ping like...

ProgrammerDude88:
This old question needs to be finalized -- accept an answer, split points, or get a refund.  For information on your options, please click here-> http:/help/closing.jsp#1
Experts: Post your closing recommendations!  Who deserves points here?

...and save CV's a LOT of time and effort.

-- Dan
Are you still looking for CV?

I'd love to help out in the VB area.

Thanks
DanRollins,
I totally agree, CleanupPing is a great help to CVs.

Click on the page 2 link in the question list area to bring up the next 20, and the addr bar will fill in with a whole lot of flags.  Near the end is a ustart=21#unlocked  -- change the 21 to about 3000 to set you near the end of that range, from there its a page forward or backward at a time...
Thanx GPrentice ...
I am still working (slowly) through my batch (Mar 31, 2003 through April 07, 2003), but am going on holday for a couple of weeks, but I'll pick it up again when I get back.
Taking VB  May 28 -- June 2
Extending to June 9
Extending to June 23
My current URL list includes about 1500 questions from Feb 1, 2003  to   Mar 15, 2003.
I intend to swing back to pick up the older ones on the next pass.

I want to personally thank and congratulate this group of CVs!

Glad to help, VB and VB Database.  A lot of slow closers there, think they post and forget to check.
westbrooknewmedia and dfWade,
Thanks for volunteering to cleanup the Visual Basics questions.  Please read the Cleanup Guidelines

Tomorrow I will give you a range of questions to work.

dfWade,
We do have an another oranized effort going in VB Database.  Post in the link below

westbrooknewmedia,
There is some talk of awarding expert points per question. But nothing is finalized.  We are waiting for the CV Autograder to come.

I would also like to get in this process. I am good in VB and VB Databases but OK in Controls. Can also try my hand in ASP, Access and Crystal Reports. However, I have a hesitation. There are a few questions where I am not able to decide the correct answer - what should be done with these questions?
YensidMod

I've gone through all my date ranges looking for ones I missed - many were ones with my own comments in them to start.  I had accidentally skipped over several pages at some point and missed a chunk of my range, and had opportunity to CV them the other night.  Tonight, I have picked up the odd one here and there, there are no Questions in any of my ranges left without recommendations:

VB Controls Jan 17 - Apr 4

VB Mar 16-23
VB Apr  24-30
VB May 8--18
VB May 19 - Jun 26  ---- about 100 missed before, caught now.

Lost count after ~1800 Qs, can't be much over 2000 done, but should be very close to it.

Once those date ranges are closed, I'll be interested in doing some more, but I'm more busy these days than I was before.  Don't want to do VB Controls anymore though...   I'll post back here in a week or so time when I'm ready, and take some smaller bites more steadily.
Sethi

May I recommend (as was recommended to me) to generate a ping-response message like Coboldinosaur...
I personally have had probably 15% of the questions get closed due to the reponse, EVEN ones that had a CleanupPing message in them earlier.  Give them a week or so think it over, including a link to the FAQ on closing questions, then followup.
Sometimes if the question could be evaluated but just take a lot of time or resources to do so, I hit it with the ping message, and sometimes its resolved a day or two later.  Just a way of prioritizing the evaluation process, but with the bonus of tagging the question in hopes that it self-fixes.

15% is not a bad number.
Don't worry about VB controls, I will be pinging whats left.

b
Sethi,
Thank you for volunteering.  Please read throught the docuements that I asked westbrooknewmedia and dfWade t read. Tomorrow I will give ranges of questions to work.

GPentice00,
Thanks for getting the sections cleaned up.

srimanth,
Wow! That was fast.  I looked at the list that you posted in Cleanup.  Good format.   I made a recommendation on the last question that you left as "no idea".   A Moderator will finalize the list in 7 to 10 days.   Do you want another range of questions to work?  Do you want a larger number of questions?

Dan,
Yes, it is a great accomplishment to get the number of open questions down from over 6,000 to less than 3.000. It is due to you, GPrentice00, and all the cleanup volunteers past and present.

YensidMod,

I thought u asked me to take up May 1 - 4, 2003. However, i realized that somewhere in mid of May 2nd, i clashed with saurabhgupta who was also working on the same dates. anyways, i have completed the rest:

Thanks
planocz,
So this is a general ping, and if asker do not respond, then you will be posting a specific recommendation and posting the quesions in a list in Cleanup area?

YensidMod
EE Moderator
HI Yensidmod,
I can do that or I can use the piece from COBOLdinosaur remarks....

This question has been classified abandoned. I will make a recommendation to the moderators on its resolution in a week or two. I appreciate any comments
that would help me to make a recommendation.

<note>
Unless it is clear to me that the question has been answered I will recommend delete.  It is possible that a Grade less than A will be given if no expert makes a case for an A grade. It is assumed that any participant not responding to this request is no longer interested in its final disposition.
</note>

If the user does not know how to close the question, the options are here:
https://www.experts-exchange.com/help/closing.jsp"

It creates more work for the Cleanup Volunteers, having to visit the question a second time to post a recommendation, but it puts the responsibility on the Experts who originally took part in the question to recommend how it should be closed.

Or you can suggest a "B" grade (in the Cleanup list) and let the Moderators take the flak when they process the list.

Or the even easier option - Recommend a delete & let the Experts justify keeping the question :-)

Whichever way, the Moderators will support you.

planocz,
You can post a general ping and if no one answers, a final recommendation to each question.  Then post the questions in a list in Cleanup topic.  The idea is to close the questions in a timely manner, and not hope the askers will close them.

Thank you for posting to these questions.  You will need a specific recommendation posted inside each question before posting to the Cleanup Topic.  The specific recommendation will allow experts to see and object. If recommendation is outside, they cannot see them.

Also, you need to post full links, not partial links. For example, for the first one, the link should be

planocz,
I still have some questions regarding your latest list.

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20781673/Visual-Basic-Due-Oct-31-03.html

You contradict yourself and make it very confusing for the experts or Moderator to respond.  On the first question you posted, you wrote

"No comment has been added lately, so it's time to clean up this TA.
I will leave a recommendation in the Cleanup topic area that this question is:
No reponse from unisoftsystems from 5/15/2003 comment

Delete/No Refund or Accept a comment is recommend.

Please leave any comments here within the next seven days."

I thought we agree that you were going to post either Delete / No Refund or Accept an expert comment, but not both?  Or is this left over from a previous post?

And on this question

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20589906/How-to-creat-a-simple-C-dll-in-VC-that-can-be-used-in-VB.html

You posted Delete / No Refund on the outside on the list and accept an expert comment on the inside in the question?

CONGRATULATIONS Visual Basic CVs!!!!!!!

VB now shows less than 2000 open questions!   The oldest are no more than 5 months old, and most are no more than 90 days.   We are clearly "ahead of the curve," and with one more push, we'll be in true maintenance mode.

This is an incredible accomplishment!  For years, VB was the "dirtiest" TA on the site with over 6000 abandoned questions.  Now we're ahead of most of the other busy TAs, WAY ahead of many of them -- check it out:
