The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

I'm no JavaScript expert, so I don't have a solution for your problem.

When you enable debugging output, you get error messages like this in the console window:

(event handler):Value undefined (result of expression painting1) is not object. Cannot be called.
(event handler):Value undefined (result of expression painting2) is not object. Cannot be called.

This page describes how to enable debugging in Safari: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030906093300383

Thanks. Anybody out there a javascript expert? LOL

The problem lies here:

When you do: document.getElementById("xx").innerHTML, Safari does not recognize "innerHTML" as memeber of the object xx and throws an error.

Use this cross-browser function instead:

function changeInnerHTML(divId,html){
 if (document.getElementById) {
       document.getElementById(divId).innerHTML= html;
 }else{
     document.layers[divId].document.open();
     document.layers[divId].document.write(html);
     document.layers[divId].document.close();
 }
}

Hope it helps,
-tom

Okay, so how would I convert the following into that new code? This is how I have it set up now. Everything works on Rollover. I tried a couple of ways and can't get it to work.

function painting1() {
      document.getElementById("paintname").innerHTML = "Pudor y libertad";
      document.getElementById("paintdim").innerHTML = "100cm x 81cm";
      document.getElementById("paintmed").innerHTML = "Oil on Canvas";
      document.mainImage.src='images/large_amerida01.jpg';

      }

<-------------------In HTML----------------------------->

OnMouseOver="painting1()"

<SPAN ID="paintname">Buscando a la Dama</SPAN>
<SPAN ID="paintdim">116cm x 73cm</SPAN>
<SPAN ID="paintmed">Oil on Canvas</SPAN>

11.16.2004 at 09:08AM PST, ID: 12595767
This way:

function painting1() {
     changeInnerHTML('paintname','Pudor y libertad');
     changeInnerHTML('paintdim','100cm x 81cm');
     changeInnerHTML('paintmed','Oil on Canvas');
     document.mainImage.src='images/large_amerida01.jpg';
}

Always use single quote for strings in Javascript.

Tom,

I tried you way, and it doesn't seem to be working on any browsers.

But I did figure out what is wrong from my orginial code. Everything is working in all browsers now.

At the top of my Javascript I had:
<SCRIPT language="" type="text/javascript">

so I changed it to

<SCRIPT language="JAVASCRIPT" TYPE="TEXT/JAVASCRIPT">

Now is everything is working....
I guess Safari doesn't recongize the first line as being Javascript.
Any idea why?

Strange how things work out huh?

11.16.2004 at 04:47PM PST, ID: 12599946
May be an idea is because Safari doesn't know how to parse the content of the <SCRIPT></SCRIPT> tags if the language attribute is empty or null.
