Question

What rate should I charge for business card design?

Asked by: wingcat

Hi,

This may sound like an odd question. I a freelance webdesigner who is just getting into business card design because clients wanted them. I was able to hook up with a company who will print them for a reduced rate so I can resell to my clients.

What is a reasonable amount that people charge for business card design and what are prices that they go for. I imagine that this varies so I just want opinions from designers who also do this.

I will award points to people who provide me with good answers and will be split amongst those who provide the best one.

Thanks for you help on this.

The rate will depend on were you are located.  Find out what local businesses are charging and you may wish to charge as much, a little more because maybe your is a supiorer product; or a little less to get a little more business.

Just like in consulting, my rate in the area I work is a little higher then most consultants.  Now two hour east the norma is about 15 - 20 dollar hight, two hours west they are actually $5 cheaper.  You need to find out when the local population is will to pay.

Also, you may wish to have a sales at the beginnin to get a clientelle in that area of business and to have referrences.

Also, something like business cards is someting you can sell in many geographical areas.

i can say you should atleast charge 40 an hour for the business card design, how ever long and revisions it may take. if your printing the business cards, charge a one time template fee of 65 dollars, if you're doing the printing... charge 20 dollars per 250 cards,  perhaps a discount rate for 500 at $35.

what do you say, do we have a deal?

PriceD has given you a great answer so I don't want to go over trodden ground...but the tricky part is what you do with your business plan..?

Somehow you are limiting your audience or you are not looking further enough. Surely anyone with a cid will be able to design their own Bc. I venture to say that you could exploit the design to develop a cid for someone who needs a Bc. And that should be the strting point.

In my experience Bcs come last. You'd never design a business card from scratch and then think how you can extrapolate that into the rest of virtual and tangible presence that you need.

A good pitch always starts with a wholesome look at the full, bigger picture so you need to modify your approach a little.

As for the price, this will allow you to build on PriceD's advice for your territory, but look at the whole package. And be a tad cheaper and do good work.

Never say no,always say yes and then figure out how to do it.

Just 2 pence worth...

Are the web rates here similar to yours?

http://ezinearticles.com/?Standard-Rates-For-Graphic-Design&id=429015

Or go for an hourly rate

http://graphicdesign.about.com/od/career/a/hourly_flat.htm

also see

http://www.costhelper.com/cost/small-business/graphic-designer.html

Of course the above are only general guidelines. The advice to research the local market is sound. I think the hourly rate principle is a good starting point. But then how will you estimate the time to complete the job. I could design a decent card in 10 min to half an hour, I have 29 years of experience, that I guess has also to be factored in. How much time are you expecting to put into each card, how many variations will have a bearing on your quotes. Clients these days can go online, pick a template and design their own cards, have them printed and delivered for minimal costs, If you can offer more than this solution and sell it accordingly then charge so.

What software are you going to use to do the work?
Are you familiar with the process required to produce print work dpi/cmyk etc.?

I'm sorry if I've posed more questions than given answers, if you need more advice please ask.
