How can you get automatic Thumbnail of website embeded ?

This may sound crazy but want to know if it is possible to get a website to look up another address create a thumbnail that you can then use as a link to the master ??

Embedded site could be either a static image (just refreshing on a fixed period) or a fully operational version.

Have tried Iframes & dont like the resulting output - without anyone can tell me how to set a zoom within the iframe say to 80%

unusual I know but any help would be appreciated , not concerned what language used either just need some advice from the experts to get me onthe right track. If there is no answer then please also let me know so I can go whimper in a darkened corner quitley.
