We are in the process of upgrading our entire network infrastructure. One major component is Active Directory, which we don't have yet and are working on a design. My problem is that we will be getting a server to host MS SharePoint WSS 3.0, and have been pulled in two seperate directions for how to setup Active Directory.
What I need to know is how should I setup Active Directory for a SharePoint environment that will have the following sites:
- Sites that are for staff only, but they will be able to access it from home,
- Sites that allow anonymous access,
- Sites that have staff and clients, but require a higher level of security.
Our current environment is using a seperate domain for our SharePoint portals, and that seems to work well, but in the new environment we want to keep organized, while maintaining security. Can anyone help me out?

So for the AD portion of your setup, are your internal and external users all being added into the same AD forest? Which would mean there is no seperate AD area for external users? Does that keep the external users out of your network as well?
* I am not sure if it is called a forest, so if that doesn't make sense please ignore that word :D
Ok - my apologies - I didn't catch the part about needing a domain for "external" (as in - not ever part of your network) users.
I thought you simply meant that domain users would need access from outside of your network (via network username/password)...
It wouldn't hurt, of course, to set up a separate domain for external users - thus keeping them out of your internal network. The same principle applies as far as creating AD security groups.

The infrastructure that we have is this:
1 internal domain (ourcompany.int) to which Active Directory users are assigned.
We have file servers, exchange servers, etc.... Our MS Sharepoint server was attached to the domain and then we set AD security groups to include certain members. Then in Share Point we assign those groups certain rights based on needs.
If you want Share Point to be accessible then you'll need a public IP mapped through a "pix" firewall or other means to the interanl IP of the Share Point box.
