It really depends on how small your business is. If your business is going to be on the smaller contracter side you should be able to get by using a MS Access database tailored to your needs. If you are planning on spending some money you may want to check out ACT or Goldmine.
Since you are more technical than most you may also want to do a search on sourceforge.net for open source CRM software. There is a lot of good MySQL PHP applications that are easy to put together and customizable later as your business goes (and the "free" price tag doesn't hurt either)
