McKinsey 7s model is a theoretical framework for a value based management approach; it is described as a way of assessing holistic and effective corporate strategy. It envisions inter-relationship between the seven factors, namely, shared values, strategy, structure, systems, staff, style and skills. It is supposed to be a diagnostic tool for ineffective organisations.
It is more of an idealised scenario. Not all of these factors are measurable. Strategy, structure and systems(hard s's) are practical; the other four s's are soft and depend on various factors like culture and beliefs. In the modern day of globalisation, ideals cannot be put before profits. Therefore, I do not think this model is practical for all businesses. However, every manager in a corporate environment is aware of these factors and I am sure will claim that their businesses are structured according to these principles.
