If you're using Windows, you should try WinDiff. This was published by Microsoft in 1998(?). It's a graphical tool (of course) that compares files. Not sure if it compares directories. You can obtain it at http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/ScriptsGuy/windiff.zip.

and display the different. (even for Directories)
