Question

Is there any AS/400 Simulator for Windows?

Asked by: DOOM_DAEMON

I've just got a job on AS/400 RPG Programming. Actually all my experiences go through SQL Server, And Windows Base Programming. So I wonder...
If there is any AS/400 Simulator for windows platform or any RPG for AS/400 Simulator for windows exists in order to study more when I come back home so I'll have my experience improved faster than using it at a company site. So Please let me know if there is such simulator and let me know where and how to download it. Is it free? Tell me more and I'll give you some points....Thanks

Doom,  researching your question.  First thing that came to my mind was a company called ATS out of Cal.  I purchased some of their training course (7 years ago), that were 'do and learn'.  at the time it ran local on the AS400.  Last time I got a product newletter they were moving towards a Windows based training suite for the AS400. At the time it sounded like what you are looking for.  If I find them I can't vouch for their new stuff, but their previous product gets high marks.  - Doie

Hey....

Simulating a perfect machine on a wacky semi-OS???..

Oke sorry, depends on what you want to do thera are 2 visual RPG options
1. IBM VisualAge for RPG (AS/400 is needed for DB connection)

2. Visual RPG from ASNA (runs with AS400 ODBC or with a local DB)
See for more info: http://www.asna.com/AVR_Caviar_information.asp

I was realy impressed of the ASNA solution..
But see it your self, they can supply an test version.

Regards.

For a Windows-based AS/400 "simulator" (i.e., programming environment emulator) you could check out the following link: http://www.californiasoftware.com/calsw/index.asp?Contents=prod&Product=bise

Caveats are: 1) It is a corporate-oriented solution and is likely pretty expensive even for a single-user copy.  by corporate-oriented I mean it has functional capabilities to do all kinds of 400-to-Windows integration, but it also has the capability to simulate an AS/400 system on the PC, including downloading/compiling/executing CL and RPG on the PC, which is what I think you are looking for.  (This is the type of core functionality the product started out with years ago, and it looks like they now market it stressing the integration capabilities.)

2) Looks like it still only runs on Windows NT (maybe even just on Server).  Last time I looked at the California Software products (several years ago) I thought they would have a W2K version of it by now.  Maybe they do but you have to request info from them ("a rep will contact you...").

3) You have to request info from them ("a rep will contact you").

BUT, if you have a reasonably beefy PC to put Windows NT Server 4.0 on (which you can buy on ebay for around $175, which isn't bad), and the cost of a single-user copy of Baby/iSeries400 from California Software isn't prohibitive, it might be a solution.  I would be interested myself to know what the cost of the product is now; I might request the info from them myself.

Take into account that when that windows-based AS/400 emulator crashes on your face, it will not be AS/400's fault, but windows'. OS/400 NEVER CRASHES!

Take a look at this page:

http://www.rpgiv.com/codestudio/download.html

There you can download a shareware called "CodeStudio" which is an RPG IV editor for the windows platform.

Hope it helps.
