Question

Converting AS400 file to excel and mail it as Excel only not as .CSV or .doc or .rtf

Asked by: anurag_atrey

As of Now, I am using CPYTOIMPF to first get .csv format file from AS400 physical file and then I am using CPYTOPCD to convert it to document (which will be in csv format). I am mailing this csv document to the users and then users need to detach this file and manually give .xls option to save it as excel.

Please let me know how can I directly get excel sheet data (not csv) from AS400 physical file and mail it directly as excel so that user need not to save it as .xls.
and how can I get coloumn heading in the excel same as that of AS400 physical file.

Its Urgent.

Hi
Check out these babies available on the seriesnetwork
You must register first but the articals are free

The sample source code that I've written for this article demonstrates
how to call this service program, and it also demonstrates a more
complex sample workbook -- including one that has multiple sheets --
and shows you how to use larger fonts and merge cells. You can
download this article from the iSeries Network Web site at the
following link:
http://www.iseriesnetwork.com/noderesources/code/clubtechcode/ExcelCrtDemo.zip .

More information about calling Java methods from RPG programs can be
found in the "WebSphere Development Studio ILE RPG Programmer's
Guide," which is in the Information Center at the following link:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/v5r2/ic2924/books/c0925074.pdf

The following is a link to the January 8, 2004, issue of this
newsletter, where I demonstrated reading an Excel file in RPG:

Geert Van Landeghem also has a tutorial online that demonstrates how
to use these Java classes to create an Excel spreadsheet. You can read
his tutorial at the following link:

iSeries Access has an Excel add-in that allows a direct transfer from a file on the 400 into Excel. You may have to install the add-in manually in order for it to show up. In Excel 97 it's under Tools>Add-ins. Browse to Program Files\IBM\Client Access\Shared and the add-in is called cwbtfxla.xll. After you install this add-in there will be options under the Excel Data menu to transfer to and from the 400.

Alternatively, the data transfer function by itself also allows you to specify Excel as a target format. For the output device specify File and go into Details to tell it what type of file you want. There are several Excel formats to choose from.

Two things I would like to mention that may work into your existing process very nicely:

a) The simplest (sp?) thing to do would be to make the extension on the file being emailes out .CSV; while this doesn't make the file a native XLS file excel will automatically open the file.  When office installs it registers the CSV file extension to Excel to excel will know how to open it.

b) A inexpensive product called Presto 123 from paeinc (http://www.paeinc.com) will give you more control over the creation of the CSV files and will let you slip this conversion into your job stream without changing much -- i.e. still use the cpytopcd etc.  This product will also let you convert a spool file to HTML or PDF to preserve formatting.

The java excel program that Dave is talking about works great. Now take that one more step and add the java open source mail from Sun.  We use this here and have made changes to the java mail eng to enable it to do more. you can tweek it so that it is a full blown eamil server running on your as400.  You can also add in the open source 400 code to convert your excel file to pdf.  So your options now are to create your excel file place it in a folder on your root drive then if needed pdf the file and then email it. This is a great process which we used every day here.

Some sample interface code for the email.  This has our enhancements in it but you will get the idea.
