I've been tasked to find a replacement for our AS400 model 720. We're on V5R2. We run our own warehouse distribution software purchased in the early-90s and enhanced many times by long gone programmers.
The company wants to add and run 4 other 'remote' warehouses (GA, NJ, WI and CA) off my box in MO. This box is too old and slow to handle it. They said we'll just get a another box. That's easy to say but not easy to do.
The problem as i see it is migrating the software. I don't even know what the latest version of software or the model of AS400 is available. And, can we go from V5R2 to whatever version (i doubt it) in one jump.
I know the move may have to be done in stages. Migrate from V5R2 on our 720 to an 820(?) and whatever version we can jump to and then another migration to some other box.
I'm looking for any suggestions as to the quickest and simplest way to get the software from point A to point B on a newer and faster box? Any suggestions as to which box? Hopefully one that would not go extinct (as in unsupported) too soon.
