iSeries and APC Symmetra UPS Communication

We have an IBM iSeries / AS-400 Mainframe and an APC Symmetra 80kva UPS.  The iSeries is located in our Server Room, and the Data Center UPS is located in the UPS room, located next to the Server Room.  What is the best way for the APC UPS and the iSeries software to communicate?  APC's support doesn't seem to willing to get back to me on this one.  The distance between the two rooms and equipment is about 40 feet (and about a 50 to 75 foot cable run to follow our cable trays.  I believe this would rule out RS-232 serial communications due to length.

Is there a Network Shutdown utility from APC that can be loaded on the iSeries?  Our Symmetra and all it's associated PDU's are connected to a "UPS LAN" and does communicate to us via email/SMTP alerts via the APC Infrastructure Client.
