Is there any system call to find the MAC address / ethernet card hardware address of my machine?

Why would ifconfig and netstat not be available to you?
Assuming you can get the source for ifconfig, see how it gets the MAC address:-
strace ifconfig eth0 shows it opening fstating and reading /proc/net/dev (which does not appear to contain MAC addresses) and also shows it obtaining an IP socket, doing a bunch of ioctls on it and an fstat. That is about all it seems to do, so find code like that in the source and you should be on to it.
