Renaming files within directory structure

This is quite embarrassing to have to ask:

My Mac users have named hundreds of files\directorys with special characters. Could a shell script be used to search for special chars and remove them? ie. Filename: rename My\File-name my_file_name or just strip off the special chars completely to myfilename.

This is on an adaptec Snap 18000 that has a modified redhat backend.

This critical as I have to move the files off of the Snap 18000 onto a storage array with Windows 2003 Storage Server that doesn't like special chars.
