The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Trouble patching Fedora 7 kernel for IMQ support

Asked by CCTV17 in Linux Programming, Fedora Linux

I'm attempting to add IMQ support to a Fedora 7 box, but I'm having trouble with it.  I'm new at this kernel-building thing, so I've probably missed something basic.

Here's the short version of my process:

1) Download/install the kernel source rpm

2) Extract the source files
rpmbuild -bp --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec

3) The IMQ patch introduces new modules, so patch the source files for building the config file
patch -p1 < ~/linux-2.6.23-imq.diff

4) Make the config file with the IMQ modules
make oldconfig
cp .config ~/rpmbuild/SOURCES/config-i686

5) Add the patch to the spec file
...
Patch9999: linux-2.6.23-imq.diff
...
ApplyPatch linux-2.6.23-imq.diff
...

6) Build the kernel
rpmbuild -bb --with baseonly --without debuginfo --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec

It scrolls through some build stuff and then aborts.  Here are the last few lines:

CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_IMQ
CONFIG_IP6_NF_TARGET_IMQ
CONFIG_IMQ
make[1]: *** [nonint_oldconfig] Error 3
make: *** [nonint_oldconfig] Error 2
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.36592 (%prep)
RPM build errors:
Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.36592 (%prep)

Does anybody have any thoughts about what might have gone wrong?

Thanks!
