Question

Save and Restore Desktop Settings

Asked by: dbilling

How can I find desktop settings, save and then later restore them.  I am particularly interested in the System settings, which include Screen, confirmations, background, etc.  I know I should be able to use SysINI to find the settings, but I have not found the right combination to ask for.

Right-click the mouse anywhere on the OS/2 desktop.
Choose "Properties".
Choose "Archive".
Select "Create archive at each system startup".
Close the window.
Shutdown OS/2.
Reboot OS/2, and it will save everything.
Repeat the mouse-clicking,
this time de-selecting "Create archive...".

I need to clarify what I am asking.  I am developing a backup program for OS/2.  This program will copy bitmaps, emulator sessions setting, Netscape cache etc., to a sever which can be copied to another box, or back to the original box.  I want to copy desktop settings as well, anything found in system properties.

Have you looked at Hank Kelder's "WP Tools" package,
especially his "CheckINI" application?
It "walks" through the 'OS2.INI' file.

by: anandkPosted on 1999-10-12 at 07:31:26ID: 2120009

OS/2 maintains two files OS2.INI and OS2SYS.INI in C:\OS2\INSTALL (assuming C: is your boot drive). These two files maintain desktop settings.
Have I answered your question?

by: dbillingPosted on 1999-10-12 at 09:18:51ID: 2120424

Well, I think we are getting close.  Where can I find Hank Kelder's "WP Tools" ?  Again, I need to be able to store the settings on a server, and restore them.  I want to stay away from the INI files, as they tend to become corrupted.

by: anandkPosted on 1999-10-12 at 09:45:33ID: 2120523

Since you are going to just save the settings and restore them, there should be no reason for you to worry using the INI files, unless you are going to modify them or edit them in anyway.

by: dbillingPosted on 1999-10-12 at 10:04:07ID: 2120581

So, how to I get the data from the INIs?

by: OttaPosted on 1999-10-12 at 23:04:40ID: 2122161

ANANDK, please do not post "comments" or "questions",
and claim that they are "answers".

Henk (not 'Hank') Kelder's web-page is:

WPTOOLS is a collection of OS/2 specific tools.
Some tools in the archive are:

CHECKINI - Checks Workplace shell related stuff in the OS2.INI and OS2SYS.INI, mainly
intended to keep the INI-Files clean and (relatively small) and thus have the best
     performance while using the workplace Shell;

WPSBKP - Make a backup of most workplace shell objects in a text file. This text file can
be used to restore a customised workplace shell after the desktop has be reinstalled or to
     port parts to another machine;

     WPSREST - Restores a backup made with WPSBKP;

     RESETWPS - Resets the workplace shell without rebooting;

WPTOOLS.DLL - A dynamic link library that, amongst other things, can be used from
REXX to query object settings. This DLL is also used by WPSBKP to query object
settings. As far as I know this is the only tool in the world to query setup strings.

DEFASSOC.EXE- Manipulate Associations from the command line

GETOBJ.EXE- Query object settings from the command line

Sorry, pal... Guess I chose the wrong option... I am new in this forum...I did not realise that the question gets locked if I press 'answer'

Looks Like WPTools has the solution I am looking for.  Thanks to everyone for your input.  I am looking forward to using this utility.

DBILLING, although OTTA provided most of the information
that you asked for, you "accepted" another person's answer.
I hope that this was an accident.
Anyway, ANANDK now has his/her first answer-points,
for whatever they are worth.  It's good to have an
"IBM-insider" in this forum, to answer questions
about the OS/2 Kernel and the OS/2 HPFS,
and, maybe, to tell us when a "Warp 5 client"
will be available to users of OS/2.

by: dbillingPosted on 1999-10-13 at 10:28:09ID: 2124103

Although OTTA provided most of the information, he did not tell me where I could find it.  Although I searched the internet using several search engines, I could not find it.

ANADK did tell me where to find the information, which otherwise would have been useless.

Thanks,
David

David, can I have your e-mail address please..

Otta, your e-mail address too... please

Are you *sure* that Otta didn't provide the URL?  :-)

I tried:

http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=q&kl=XX&q=%2Bkelder+%2Bwptools

and found:

http://www.nfwa.com/os2/softwaredevelopers/utilities/maintenance.html

Also, http://OS2.ABOUT.COM  is a good source of OS/2 information.

I think Otta deserves the points, not me. Anyway it can be changed? That is the points be given to Otta?
Otta, you haven't given me your e-mail address. David, you too...
Please do....
Thank you..

by: dbillingPosted on 1999-10-14 at 05:16:14ID: 2126370

David.Billingsley@usaa.com

I do not have a problem with Otta receiving the points

by: OttaPosted on 1999-10-14 at 08:18:06ID: 2126920

I've got a bit-bucket-full of answer-points.
It's too much effort to try to re-assign
the answer-points for this question.
Please don't waste anybody's time trying to "correct"
this situation -- "live and learn".

P.S. I consider my E-mail address to be "private".
Perhaps, if you stated a reason for your request,
then I may oblige.  Until then, I'm "anonymous".

This question was awarded, but never cleared due to the JSP-500 errors of that time.  It was "stuck" against userID -1 versus the intended expert whom you awarded.  This corrects that and the expert will now receive these points, all verified.
