Sample Input: 0.058324
Output needed: 5.8%
this is what I have been working on:
#!/bin/bash
percentage=`cat /home/username/output.new4
percentage2=$(printf "%-9.3f" "$percentage")
percentage3=$(printf "$percentage2" * 100)
echo $percentage3

Try:
`
#!/bin/bash
percentage=`cat /home/username/output.new4
percentage=`echo "$percentage * 100" | bc`
percentage3=`printf "%-9.3f" "$percentage2"`
echo $percentage3
Note: I've multiplied your initial input by 100, before rounding to 3 decimals, to save the potential loss of precision.
