I have 5 java files and I would like to zip them so that the extension of the zip file is *.tar.gz. Can you please tell me the command that I can use on a UNIX machine in order to zip those files into .tar.gz format?

tar cvf name_of_tar.tar javafile1 javafile2 javafile3 javafile4 javafile5
gzip name_of_tar.tar
If you have the gnu flavor of tar, you can use the z option:
tar zxvf name_of_tar.tar.gz javafile1 javafile2 javafile3 javafile4 javafile5
