mail and sendmail command-line options

I stuck the sendmail code into my shell script:

sendmail -t -oi  <<EOF
From: build@joe.com
To: joe@joe.com
Subject: [Bug $bugid]

`cat bugstatusupdate.txt`
EOF

but I'm getting an "Unexpected end of file" error.  I even put quotes around EOF like so "EOF", but it still doesn't work.

Make sure there are no leading or trailing whitespace around each EOF

I put the sendmail block within an if statement and it is not the only statement in my script.  I'm not sure what you mean by whitespace.  There are spaces before the sendmail statement and after the EOF, like so:

# Change bug status to assigned
cd $HOME
echo @bug_status=assigned > bugstatusupdate.txt

sendmail -t -oi  <<EOF
From: build@joe.com
To: joe@joe.com
Subject: [Bug $bugid]

`cat bugstatusupdate.txt`
EOF

# Remove old folders
echo "Making target folders."

That's just the snippet of code where I've placed that sendmail envelope.  I still get the "unexpected end of file" error.

You need to put an empty line before the EOF.

I put an empty line before the sendmail statement and before the EOF (between the cat statement and EOF), and still getting that error.

Ok, you did not specify content type. Here is the code that I used:

Put a  dot (.) in the end of closing your text file properly, just like in my code.

When doing HERE docs, you need to ensure there is no leading spaces (whitespace) on the closing keyword.

For example, the following will not match, as there is a space before the closing EOF:

cat <<EOF
line one
line two
  EOF

sendmail -t -oi  <<EOM
Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii"
                                             <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< The empty line is BAD!
From: joe@blow.com
To: joe@blow.com

The empty line cause sendmail to think that all the headers have been specified - but there is no Ftom/To/Subject.

I've tried all of these solutions, but none of them are working for me.  It is not that important.  I'm going to go back to using the mail command, since it works in my script.  Thanks for your help though.
