The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

signal BUS (invalid address aligments) in ....

Asked by lofanabrams in Unix Systems Programming

Need help from the Expert,

I am running out of idea to debug this issue.  Please help!!!

My application run into a BUS error (works on window, solaris 32 bit release version) but get bus error in (solaris 64bits and 32bits debug version).  Why?  It doesn't make any sense to me.  The error occurred in the 3rd party library code and does not compiled with the debug symbol.

See below error message:

(dbx) step

t@1   (1@1)   signal BUS (invalid address alignment) in AssignUnicodeBuffer at 0xffffffff79221ee4
0xffffffff79221ee4:  AssignUnicodeBuffer+0x01cc:     sth     %14. [%13 + %12]
   t@1   a   1@1   dbx:   bad VDL/DDL:   thread:   Expected  ':event|:curr|:db_syspended|:tid|:addr|:lid|:lrelation|:state|:curfun'   but   got   :rootfun'   ' '

Note:    int AssignUnicodeBuffer(( char *) buf, int)  - It takes a char pointer buffer and the lenght of the buffer.

For example, if I declared char buf[7] (this example is in window, 32 bit, solaris give me bus signal error)
before this function call, buf=0x0012e834"" - [0]=0, [1]=0......[6]=0 [7]=garbage value
result = AssignUnicodeBuffer( (char*) buf, 7);
 after this function call, buf=0x0012e834"U" - [0]="U", [1]=0, [2]="N", [3]=0, [4]="I", [5]=0, [6]="C", [7]=0, [8]="O", [9]=0, [10]="D", [11]=0, [12]="E", [13]=0,[14]=garbage value

Why it only works on window application?  Do you think I should not typecast char [] to char*?  Is it dangerous to do this kind of type casting in 64bits application?  If it is bits conversion problem, why it also give me bus error in a 32-bit debug version?  but it works on 32-bit release error.   Or can I trust the debugger?  Maybe there is memory problems elsewhere and it just happened the debugger caught in that function?  I run the debugger more than 10 times and it failed in the same code.

I hope I can hear from you, I really need your help.  Thank you.
