How do I extract the last 2 characters of a string using shell script

How do I extract the last 2 characters of a string? Each string varies in size.


I attempted to do this:
______________________________

INPUTFILE="abc123.ok"

input_len=7

echo $INPUTFILE | awk '{ print substr($1,$input_len,3)}'

and it gives me "abc" instead of ".ok"

What could have gone wrong?
