Variable in awk command

I am using Unix SCO 5

I have a file that accepts 2 inputs, and I want to pass 1 to an awk command. For example

echo "\nEnter the the story name to build the regtable: \n"
read storyname
echo "\nEnter the name for the new zone: \n"
read zonename

awk -v stname=$storyname
awk -f city.awk city.txt stname > newzone.tmp

but I get an error saying $storyname is undefined. How do I run the awk to accept the input storyname?
