I'd like to have a master ksh script that I could put several calls to the above "sub" script.
I have an exit command in both scripts. it seems as the the exit command in sub script is exiting out of the master script as well. Is there a way to keep the exit in the sub script and still have the master script execute everything

Well,
I really can't see any obvious reason why that dot should be needed!
If you use the dot the called script becomes somewhat part of the calling script, and thus it's quite normal that the master script would exit when the sourced (.) script calls exit.
Do you get any error message when calling the sub-scripts without the dot?

exit shiuld only terminate the script in which it was issued.
How do you invoke the sub-scripts?
Don't use 'exec'!
