You think this question can be answered with such kind of information?

by: johnb6767Posted on 2009-01-18 at 00:16:10ID: 23404173

It needs to be enabled first.....

Can you boot to Safe Mode with Command promt even?

If so, just type this in....

net user administrator /active:yes

Then reboot, and you should be able to access it.....

To johnb6767 or anyone else that can help,

I am a first time user and didn't realize I should stay engagad after after asking a question. So, I asked my question and went to bed. bed Sorry.

Re your answer: I have already unsuccessfuly tried typing in the command you gave but it wasn't from safe mode. Yes, I can boot to Safe Mode.

I need to be sure I am duplicating your instructions. After booting to Safe Mode I would open Start Menue and in Run box, type CMD. Then, in the prompt, ttpe cd.. enter and repeat. I would then have C:\> and type in net (space)user(space)administrator/active:yes    and enter. Then reboot to usual mode,

Then, what would I do to access run as administrator?

Thank you for your help.

I have tried many solutions, but none have worked.

I suceeded in getting myself as Administratod, but was still blocked.

At command pronpt I entered msiexec/unregister   then msiexec/regserver.  Same error messages.

I command promped msiexec/unregister, entered, rebooted. Then I tried to install Windows Installer Version 4.5. At the very end, I got a message it had not installed.

I tried from prompt   msiexec/unregister the renaming 3 files. I wasn't allowed to rename even after becoming the Administrator.

Tried other things as well.

Now that you have more data, should I go to the link you gave me to repair Windows Installer?

by: gman8Posted on 2009-01-18 at 18:43:12ID: 23407747

Thanks for the link to Repair Windows Installer. It sounds like it could work, but pretty technical for mr. I don't have another Vista Computer available, bou will try to downloadthe "clean reg key".

If it does work, I am wondering how to set the Windows Installer Service to automatic?

by: gman8Posted on 2009-01-18 at 22:35:57ID: 23408548

I did the first step from the Repair Windows Service.

I downloaded and ran the Clean Reg Key. That by itself didn't fix the probllem. But I haven't rebooted, etc.

Do I run sfc /scannow from Command Prompt?

How do I go back into services to start the Windows Installer service and set it to automatic?

Thank you very much for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Signing off for tonight.

by: johnb6767Posted on 2009-01-18 at 23:02:23ID: 23408613

"Do I run sfc /scannow from Command Prompt?"

Yes... Or a run box.....

And it wont process the reg key until the reboot, so we have a chance......

services.msc, and then you double click the Windows Installer Service, and set it to Automatic...

I did all the steps and it didn't work. Now, however, I have found the real difficulty and what is causing all (?) the problems on my computer.

A year ago I started getting a messagr on my computer that said:
Open File Security Warning
The publisher coild not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?
Name:C:\Windows|System32|msfeedssync.exe
Publisher:Unknown Publisher
From:C:\Windows|System32|msfeedssync.exe

I repeatedly refused to open it because I didn't know what it was. But, on Jan 20, 2008 at 9:24:52 PM a friend of mine, computer knowledgeable who was helping me speed up my computter said that is a standard location - System 32. Let's see what happens.
We can always remove it and clicked to run it.

Well, now I have sorted out what happened. It was a virus or worm. It was incompatable because it was designed for Windows 95, it corrupted Windows Installer and it can't be removed. I have tracked doen all the entries at that general time and there are some 691 of them!!!!!!! All with Unknown Aplication.

None can be deleted, even by Administrator. They can only be deleted by a "TrustedInstaller" Many of them are fake Windows Installer Aplications.

How does one become a TrustedInstaller? Are you one?

HELP!!!

Much thanks for your help that put me on the right track.

To this day, even though it is installed, the same run question keeps coming up for msfeedssync.exe after every reboot.

KNOPPIX - Live Linux Filesystem On CD-
http://www.knoppix.org/

Use one of these bootable OS's to go in and nuke the file. You can even mount registry hives from these, to kill the reg locations that they load from.....

by: johnb6767Posted on 2009-01-19 at 20:18:56ID: 23417156

Actually do this.....
Find the msfeedssync.exe, and Right click it>Properties>Security>Advanced>Edit>and Remove everyone listed, but TrustedInstaller, System....

Add Everyone

Click OK Twice...

Click Edit, and Highlight each user listed at the top, and select the Full control "DENY" checkbox.

Reboot the machine....

Now, that file shouldnt be loaded in memory....You can go back to where you modified the Deny permission, and add yourself (just click ADD, and type your username).

Give yourself FULL CONTROL of the file, and then if done properly, you should be able to delete it.....

by: johnb6767Posted on 2009-01-19 at 20:19:35ID: 23417158

Course if there is more that you cant delete, then I would suggest booting to one of the bootable CD's mentioned prioer, and try and delete them there.....

Several general questions on your last 2 posts.

As I said, there are 691 files it installed. Will deleting the exe file take care of all those or will each of them need to be deleted in the same way - a huge task.

If I use the first option og a bootable OS (What does OS stand for?) how much of the computer will it wipe out? I do have Carbonite backup, but that does not restore programs and I don't know if I can selectively restore as it was a year ago.

by: gman8Posted on 2009-01-19 at 20:52:38ID: 23417292

I am reading the directions on post 2 and I think I understand them and can follow up to "and select the Full control"DENY" check box." Don't I want to ALLOW Full control? What am I missing?

And on the first option, are those CDs something I would purchase and do they have detailed directions on how to use them?

by: gman8Posted on 2009-01-19 at 20:56:37ID: 23417310

I might add when I tried to delete by following the first part of you directions it said it was protected and wouldn't let me change anything.

by: johnb6767Posted on 2009-01-19 at 20:58:19ID: 23417323

OS=Operating System

Visit the links for them, and you will find instructions on how to create tehm. They are free....

And no, I would want you to DENY them from being launched. After the reboot, whatever is trying to access them, will fail, and the file will not be in memory. Therefore, it *might* not lock the 691 files in memory... I know I am kind of reaching....

The standalone OSs though, are probably the best bet. I would start with Knoppix....

by: gman8Posted on 2009-01-19 at 21:00:18ID: 23417330

That was last night. So it was before the detailed directions you just sent, to clarify.

by: gman8Posted on 2009-01-19 at 21:09:25ID: 23417376

OK, I understand the Deny now.

Can you answer my other Qs on how much of my computer I will loose if I use one of the bootable OSs and if they give directions on how to use? I am stretching my knowhow a lot to do these things, but am learning as I go and try out new things.

by: johnb6767Posted on 2009-01-20 at 06:15:01ID: 23420092

"how much of my computer I will loose if I use one of the bootable OSs"

None, as long as you dont delete any System Files....

:^)

by: gman8Posted on 2009-01-20 at 06:32:41ID: 23420275

Thanks. To bring you up to date. I tried to delete and rename per your directions. No matter what I tried, I was not allowed to change anything. No Edit allowed.

I then went thru all the steps to download Sophos. Aeter full steps and a successful download, it informed me it doesn't support Visa.

Next, I downloaded F-secure Anti-virus. It failed. I closed and opened a new window as told. It said it was ready for a scan and was prepared to scan. That was about 10 minutes ago. It looks like nothing is happening.

Could you give some details on Housecall   online scan in Safe Mode w/networking. I don't know how to do that.

by: johnb6767Posted on 2009-01-20 at 06:49:28ID: 23420463

You can boot to Safe Mode w/ Networking.

Getting into Windows Safe Mode.
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm#03

Then go to the HouseCall website, and see what happens with the scan...

by: gman8Posted on 2009-01-20 at 08:16:11ID: 23421404

Thanks. When I checked out housecall it didn't list Vista as an Operating system.

On F=Secure, I downloaded it 5 times and each time it only went to "Preparing to scan" and no further.

Kaspersky requires Java 1.6 which I am trying aneww to download. Have failed in the past, but will try again.

Java Setup Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. Installation failed.

That only leaves one Viris scan to try- Bit defender.

by: gman8Posted on 2009-01-20 at 09:06:51ID: 23421964

On BitDefender it says, IE not running as Administrator. Please ru as IE Administrator. I have set up the computor to run as Administrator. So I don't understand this. At one point I mistakenly followed advice to click Cntrl + L and found this locked the Administrator. Could this be the problem and how do I fix it and how do I run IE Explorer as Admin?

by: gman8Posted on 2009-01-20 at 19:48:21ID: 23426726

Update:I figured ot how to run IE as Administrater and ran Bit Defender on a scan of System 32 only and on the whole computer (4 hour scan).  No problems were found with either scan nor with repeated full system scans with my CA Anti-Virus.

So, it looks like "medieval" is next.

by: gman8Posted on 2009-01-20 at 21:30:25ID: 23427115

That was a bust. Ultimate Boot and Bart's are for Windows XP or below.  With KNOPPIX I couldn't figure what it ws compatable, how to download, what to download or how to use it. Can you help? I have now tried everything ese you suggested with no solution. This viris or whatever it is doesn't show up on virus or Registry scans and Vista won't let me remove it.

Again, how do I get this thing removed?

by: johnb6767Posted on 2009-01-21 at 05:21:29ID: 23429259

They should have worked fine on your PC, as they arent dependant on the installed OS... Unles of course, you dont have an XP CD to build them....

by: gman8Posted on 2009-01-21 at 14:42:54ID: 23434880

Very good! I checked and I do have an OS Reinstallation CD for MS Windows XP Pro. Will that do it? I hadn't done more than read about it yet.

I went to safe mode internet per your instructions and was able to download and run F-secure blacklight. both only on System 32 and a full scan. It founf a bunch oe Spyware, but not the viris! Am I correct in calling this a virus?

I will give you points on all your responses soon. Thanks again.
