Does Linux have a concept correponding to Microsoft COM?

In Windows I can operate on other applications (Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, etc) by using the COM interface they expose. Is there a similar way in linux/unix to send commands to other applications to ask them to perform several task?Start Free Trial
