Communication between parent and child windows.

I have a Dialog based program, which has a property sheet as a child with property pages. Within the property page, there are buttons. I want to do some procedure in the Dialog (parent) when one of the buttons of the property page (child) is pressed. What is the most appropriate way to do that? I.e. letting the Parent Dialog know that the child property page's button is pressed.

I thought of using GetParent() in the property page and call a parent's function, but that means casting the CWnd* to a pointer of the parent dialog like:
((CParentDlg *)GetParent())->DoFunction();

It makes me a little uneasy as the casting may cause problem in the future e.g. if GetParent() gives a null or other windows.

I also thought of using SendMessage, but I do not know how to pass a custom message to the parent and catch it in the parent dialog window.

Please tell me what is the BEST way in doing it. I.e. to be safest, and least bug prone and easiest to debug in the future.

Please give an example if possible.
