Question

Changing focus in a dialog box.

Asked by: mfeik

I had some difficulty with changing the focus to the edit control when the Max chars was reached in an edit.  I ended up using this code:

void CRHTC100Dlg::OnChangeId()
{
     CString str;
     GetDlgItemText(IDC_ID,str);
     if ( str.GetLength() == 6)
          NextDlgCtrl();
}//end of OnChangeId()

which works fine but it 'feels' quite bulky.  Was just wondering if anyone can show me a better method of accomplishing this.  The DDV_MaxChars for this control is set to 6.  I attempted to move the focus when this was reached but what I got as a result was the focus changing on the input of the 7th character BUT the 7th character was placed into the next control.  In the effort of continuity I need to be able to type the 6 character and then immediately move to the next control and receive any characters I typed after the 6th from the previous control (hope I didn't over-explain).  Anyhow, I'd appreciate it if anyone can give me a more effective means of doing this.

What you have is fine.  You could subclass the edit control (So you have a generic class if you need to use this concept on multiple edit controls).

1 small shortcut.

void CRHTC100Dlg::OnChangeId()
{
   if (GetDlgItem(IDC_ID)->GetWindowTextLength() == 6)
   {
      NextDlgCtrl();
   }
}

Regards.

Actually, I have 26 edits all with different width rescrictions (this was NOT my idea - using a dialog box for this app).  Could you give me an idea of the what the class would look like? I think that is exactly what I was hoping to find.

Hi,

U can take a look at the following class files

1. In a subclassed edit control class I added a int member to store the max chars that edit can support

public:
     int m_nMaxChars;

2. The CPP looks as
// MyEdit.cpp : implementation file
//

#include "stdafx.h"
#include "close.h"
#include "MyEdit.h"
#include "closeDlg.h"

#ifdef _DEBUG
#define new DEBUG_NEW
#undef THIS_FILE
static char THIS_FILE[] = __FILE__;
#endif

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// CMyEdit

CMyEdit::CMyEdit()
{
     m_nMaxChars = -1;
}

CMyEdit::~CMyEdit()
{
}

BEGIN_MESSAGE_MAP(CMyEdit, CEdit)
     //{{AFX_MSG_MAP(CMyEdit)
     ON_CONTROL_REFLECT(EN_CHANGE, OnChange)
     //}}AFX_MSG_MAP
END_MESSAGE_MAP()

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// CMyEdit message handlers

void CMyEdit::OnChange()
{
     // TODO: If this is a RICHEDIT control, the control will not
     // send this notification unless you override the CEdit::OnInitDialog()
     // function and call CRichEditCtrl().SetEventMask()
     // with the ENM_CHANGE flag ORed into the mask.

     // TODO: Add your control notification handler code here
     if(m_nMaxChars != -1)
     {
          CString cStrChars;
          GetWindowText(cStrChars);
          if(cStrChars.GetLength() == m_nMaxChars)
          {
               ((CCloseDlg *)GetParent())->NextDlgCtrl();
          }
     }
}

Here, Close is my app name so I have CCloseDlg class which will be parent for ur edit box.

3. Then u need to add controls to the edit boxes of type CMyEdit class. Then in OnInitDialog, set the value for that variable to have how many chars u want, like
m_ctrlEdit1.m_nMaxChars = 6;
m_ctrlEdit2.m_nMaxChars = 7;

Then run it, U will get the expected behavior.

Try it out.

Just a smallee - you could use GetWindowTextLength (dunno if this is exact) instead of GetWindowText.
