How to create shadow for a custom mouse cursor?

I've created a cursor in Visual Studio.net's resoruce view and then i load it using the following code:
SetCursor(LoadCursor(hInst,MAKEINTRESOURCE(IDC_MY_CURSOR)));

and it works fine but then i notice it doesn't have that nice "shadow" effect compare to a standard mouse cursor.. so i wonder is it possible to turn on the shadow effect for my custom mouse cursor at all and how to do it?

You can draw a shadow in the cursor bitmap. To enable the mouse shadow in general go to the control panel, mouse, pointers tab (in Windows XP). There is a checkbox titled "Enable mouse shadow"

One way I do it is to copy the image and re-paste it. This way u have two copies of the bitmap on top of each other. Shift the below one by 1 pixel to the right and 1 pixel to the bottom and color the edges with dark gray

hm. i think what i want is to find the way so the system will render the shadow for me automatically.. and the shadow is not a SOLID COLOUR.. i.e. you can still see the background underneath the shadow.

For Windows XP you can create a cursor with a shadow by using a 32-bit cursor file with an alpha-blend layer for the shadow. However, I don't think you can create such fils using the Visual Studio resource editor.

You can download various free trial and shareware apps, such as http://artcursors.com/
I haven't tried using any of these free apps, but they should be easy to use.
