Question

installing a font programatically

Asked by: VEngineer

I'm writing an application in C++ using the Win32API to run on 9x/NT/2000/XP and I want to write a function to install a true-type font on the system.  I have an idea of what needs to happen, but I'm not totally sure if it is complete and I'm not sure on how to make it happen.

Assume we have a true-type font file, myfont.ttf.

My pseudocode:

if (myfont.ttf already exists on the system)
{
     we are done, return from function
}
else
{
     if (user is an administrator)
     {
          copy myfont.ttf into the windows\fonts folder?
          add an entry into the registry?
          send the WM_FONTCHANGE broadcast message?
     }
     else
     {
          MessageBox("you need to be an administrator to install fonts")
     }
}

Here's what I have so far:

BOOL IsAdmin()
{
      // straight out of MSDN

      // Question: does this work for Win9x/ME?

      SC_HANDLE hSC;
      hSC = OpenSCManager(NULL, NULL, GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE | GENERIC_EXECUTE);

      if (hSC == NULL)
            return FALSE;

      CloseServiceHandle(hSC);
      return TRUE;
}

To do the broadcast (is it necessary?) I know I can call:

     SendMessage(HWND_BROADCAST, WM_FONTCHANGE, 0, 0);

Do I need to call the following?

     AddFontResource("myfont.ttf");

Any insight into this would be very helpful.

Use 'CreateScalableFontResource()' and
'AddFontResource()' to do that after copying the file(s) to the Windows\Fonts folder - see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;186722& ("HOWTO: Programmatically
Install a True Type Font" - sorry, the code is FoxPro).

To find out whether the user is an administrator, use

BOOL RunningAsAdministrator ( void)
{
    BOOL                                    fAdmin;
    HANDLE                                    hThread;
    TOKEN_GROUPS                        *ptg = NULL;
    DWORD                                    cbTokenGroups;
    DWORD                                    dwGroup;
    PSID                                    psidAdmin;

    SID_IDENTIFIER_AUTHORITY      SystemSidAuthority      =      SECURITY_NT_AUTHORITY;

    // First we must open a handle to the access token for this thread.

    if      (      !OpenThreadToken      (      GetCurrentThread(),
                                                      TOKEN_QUERY,
                                                      FALSE,
                                                      &hThread
                                                )
            )
            {
                  if      ( GetLastError() == ERROR_NO_TOKEN)
                        {
                              // If the thread does not have an access token, we'll examine the
                              // access token associated with the process.

                              if      (      !OpenProcessToken      (      GetCurrentProcess      (),
                                                                              TOKEN_QUERY,
                                                    &hThread
                                                                        )
                                    )      return ( FALSE);
                        }
                   else      return ( FALSE);
            }

    // Then we must query the size of the group information associated with
    // the token. Note that we expect a FALSE result from GetTokenInformation
    // because we've given it a NULL buffer. On exit cbTokenGroups will tell
    // the size of the group information.

    if      (      GetTokenInformation      (      hThread,      TokenGroups,      NULL,      0,      &cbTokenGroups))
        return ( FALSE);

    // Here we verify that GetTokenInformation failed for lack of a large
    // enough buffer.

    if ( GetLastError() != ERROR_INSUFFICIENT_BUFFER)
        return ( FALSE);

    // Now we allocate a buffer for the group information.
    // Since _alloca allocates on the stack, we don't have
    // to explicitly deallocate it. That happens automatically
    // when we exit this function.

    if ( ! ( ptg= _alloca ( cbTokenGroups)))
        return ( FALSE);

    // Now we ask for the group information again.
    // This may fail if an administrator has added this account
    // to an additional group between our first call to
    // GetTokenInformation and this one.

    if ( !GetTokenInformation ( hThread, TokenGroups, ptg, cbTokenGroups,
                                       &cbTokenGroups) )
        return ( FALSE);

    // Now we must create a System Identifier for the Admin group.

    if ( ! AllocateAndInitializeSid ( &SystemSidAuthority, 2,
                                               SECURITY_BUILTIN_DOMAIN_RID,
                                               DOMAIN_ALIAS_RID_ADMINS,
                                               0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, &psidAdmin) )
        return ( FALSE);

    // Finally we'll iterate through the list of groups for this access
    // token looking for a match against the SID we created above.

    fAdmin= FALSE;

    for ( dwGroup= 0; dwGroup < ptg->GroupCount; dwGroup++)
    {
        if ( EqualSid ( ptg->Groups[dwGroup].Sid, psidAdmin))
        {
            fAdmin = TRUE;

            break;
        }
    }

    // Before we exit we must explicity deallocate the SID we created.

    FreeSid ( psidAdmin);

    return ( fAdmin);
}

Hmm - I saw that same article on MSDN.  Just wasn't sure if there was a different way of doing it from the native win32api.  I can work with that for now.

However, does your RunningAsAdministrator() function work if it's run on Windows 95/98/ME?

Nope, but it is not even necessary to call it if you're not on NT/W2k/XP - I'd add

BOOL    IsNT    ()
{
    OSVERSIONINFO       osviVerInfo;

    osviVerInfo.dwOSVersionInfoSize =   sizeof  (   OSVERSIONINFO);

    GetVersionEx    (   &osviVerInfo);

    return  (   VER_PLATFORM_WIN32_NT   ==  osviVerInfo.dwPlatformId);
}

and call 'RunningAsAdministrator()' only when on NT/W2k/XP
