The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Trouble with large fonts in Windows

Asked by MadDavid in Windows Programming, Adobe Type Manager, Font Creator

I've written some software for the mass market.  One of our users is having problems because her computer is displaying large fonts in the application.  I'm having trouble reproducing the large fonts on my computer, making it impossible to test any solutions.

The user is running Windows XP Service Pack 2, with Windows XP display style, Normal font size, and large icons.  Our program uses primarily Arial and Courier New fonts in sizes 10, 12, and 14.  Despite the "Normal" font size setting and our use of standard Windows fonts, the text in our program appears substantially larger (on her computer) than it was designed.  The controls are resized according to the font, causing them to expand off the form and causing the dynamically placed controls to overlap the design-time placed controls.  The user is unaware of any third-party software running on her computer that would change the font sizes.

I tried to reproduce the problem by changing to Windows XP style, selecting large icons, and selecting Normal, Large, and Extra Large font sizes.  When I change the font size, it only resizes the fonts used in the title bar and menu bar, not the tab-pages, buttons, labels, etc. in the body of the form.  The controls do not rescale, so the application looks much as it did when I designed it under normal font size.

My question is, how else do I get the OS to resize the fonts and controls used in the body of the application?  Start Free Trial
