The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

IP address conflict - need to find computer name from MAC address

Tags: IP Address Conflict
I just logged into my domain controller and got an error message stating that there appears to be an IP address conflict. I have not added any new hardware to the network in the past several weeks so I find this error message very strange. I have the MAC address of the conflicting system from the event logs. Is there a way to do some sort of reverse lookup to find the computer name of the offending computer from it's MAC address?

Is it a conflict with your DC and another system or 2 systems?

You could run nmap on your network. It Displays IP addresses, device name, and and mac address.

You could try this program:

http://www.youngzsoft.net/cc-get-mac-address/

Alternately If you can change the IP of the DC temporarily then you could try to use WINS to resolve the IP (the conflict) into the PC name using:

ping -a ip

from a dos prompt.

Open a Command Prompt and type

arp -a

and locate the MAC adress on the list that is shown.

If you have access to the local network switches you can issue a "show ip arp" command if Cisco or "show arp" if Foundry.
There may be a lot of devices so you can filter the output for your specific IP "show arp | inc 10.10.10.x"
Hope this helps.

he has the mac address already guys

another idea I just thought of is if you are part of a domain you could try to see what services the IP is running, if its on the domain try to connect to c$ share. See if its running a webserver etc etc, you may be able to figure out what the machine is called from that.
you can use nmap (www.nmap.org) to finger print it and see what OS it is running - nmap will also map the MAC address to the manufactuer which may also help figuring out what the device is.

Thanks

Ya, I downloaded nmap and started an intensive scan on my entire subnet about 2 hours ago.... I learned the hard way that I should have just done the specific IP in question. Oh well. Maybe I'll find out some other useful information once the scan is complete.

But yes you are correct, I already have the MAC address. I need to try and trace it to a computer.

03.10.2008 at 09:04PM PDT, ID: 21092964
If you have the Mac then you can track down which port on the switch it is connected to.

03.11.2008 at 06:31AM PDT, ID: 21095489
When I use nmap it just shows results for my domain controller, not the machine that is conflicting with it. Also, none of my switches are managed except my gateway (Cisco 1800 series) so I can't track down a MAC address from the switch.

03.11.2008 at 06:46AM PDT, ID: 21095629
Hmmm, well aside from temporarily changing the ip of your DC I'm not sure how you are going to be able to find it. You could change the ip of your dc, nmap the ip in question. That should give you a computer name.

I'd do this after hours of course.

Anyone else got any ideas?

I went ahead and changed the IP of my dc. The scan result from the nmap didn't really give me anything useful. It showed that only telnet and http ports were open. Here are the fingerprints from the scan:

Glad you found it. Kind of weird that it would just start doing that though.
