Windows 7 is a little finicky when it comes to upgrades..... I strongly believe that they are doing this on purpose to discourage them. There are very clearly defined upgrade paths set at http://technet.microsoft.c
"...Upgrades Not Recommended
Windows 7 upgrades are so complex that they can reportedly take up to 20 hours. The consensus among users is that the best way to upgrade is with a clean install (read: by removing everything). To me, a clean install is not really an upgradeit's just putting a shiny new OS on an old clunker. A true upgrade involves installing a new OS on a system with all of the old data intact. Everyone says Windows 7 is no good at this..." more info at http://www.pcmag.com/artic
If you purchased and upgrade media, you need to either follow to the dot the "Upgrade Paths" published by Microsoft in the link I posted above (and even then expect problems and delays) or do a more convenient and more stable "Clean Install" which would basically involve that you backup your data to any external media and re-install your programs.
You have not provided much information as to how you are installing so this is all I can offer you at this time.
I am attaching for you to read a 3 articles.... you will find them helpful. They look alike...all 3 are different scenarios.
