Windows 7 is a little finicky when it comes to upgrades..... I strongly believe that they are doing this on purpose to discourage them. There are very clearly defined upgrade paths set at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772579(WS.10).aspx and all the experts in the matter are discouraging it according to John C. Dvorak - PcMagazine:

"...Upgrades Not Recommended
Windows 7 upgrades are so complex that they can reportedly take up to 20 hours. The consensus among users is that the best way to upgrade is with a clean install (read: by removing everything). To me, a clean install is not really an upgradeit's just putting a shiny new OS on an old clunker. A true upgrade involves installing a new OS on a system with all of the old data intact. Everyone says Windows 7 is no good at this
..." more info at http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2354784,00.asp

If you purchased and upgrade media, you need to either follow to the dot the "Upgrade Paths" published by Microsoft in the link I posted above (and even then expect problems and delays) or do a more convenient and more stable "Clean Install" which would basically involve that you backup your data to any external media and re-install your programs.

You have not provided much information as to how you are installing so this is all I can offer you at this time.

I am attaching for you to read a 3 articles.... you will find them helpful. They look alike...all 3 are different scenarios.

ok i am frustrated , lets forget about upgrade.
i am now trying to custom install. i have tried many thing , but when i but windows 7 cd in my dvd drive all i get is above mentioned error.

is my dvd faulty ?  or its MICROSOFT 's CD?

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-29 at 05:31:24ID: 25692857

I could be one or the other. If you have another computer you could test the DVD to see if it boots and then cancel.

Is your computer "booting" from the DVD? Have you set it to boot from the DVD? Depending on the brand and model, some computers boot from the CD/DVD when you press on F12 on the boot screen. Others, you need to change the boot order in the BIOS.....

I need some feedback from you on my questions: Did you do your previous failed install as an upgrade? Did you run this install from within Vista or did you start the computer with the Windows 7 DVD? Did you backup your data?

Data on DVD/CD is corrupted. Get another one.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-29 at 07:17:22ID: 25693915

siddharthkool...... The data on the DVD cannot get corrupted. It can get damaged by a scratch or a warped DVD because of heat or something else (someone puts the DVD in his pocket and sits on it). These DVD are "stamped" ... not written thus the data cannot get corrupt.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-10-29 at 07:18:15ID: 25693928

The simplest way to find out if the DVD is damaged is to test it on another computer.... this will test both the DVD and the DVD drive.

by: siddharthkoolPosted on 2009-10-29 at 15:49:40ID: 25698992

Appreciate all your comments , but yes as bitsbytesandmore says i should try this on other computer.

Hi BitsBytesandMore, rknetwork,

Gents, gents keep it cool, we all know that the software on the DVD is corrupted, it's from Microsoft remember that is standard for them??

Good Luck

@rknetwork

with respect, that is complete nonsense. DVDs are commercially injection moulded, unless you physically damage these there is no data corruption. Once you do physical damage to the pit structure there is no question of single files being not accessible but read and seek errors.

You are fairly new to the side, you may want to read through the ethos of this site and how to interact with other members especially experts that take time out to help others. You won't get far with bad attitude and foul language.

siddharthkool, murphey2: Thanks guys. I appreciate your kind words.

This is not the professional way problems are normally addressed here in EE.... (this is an exception, highly unprofessional and rude - I personally have never seen this behavior among members). We all normally work as a team and when we disagree....we actually agree to disagree and always are looking for solutions that will benefit the asker.

Sometimes a discussion can get heated and escalate, because of the very nature and unpredictability of computers themselves, but when it escalates, it is always cordially, respectfully and usually at the end productive (we end up learning something). I do apologize for you having to witness this and for any part I might have contributed to this.

I do have one more question for siddharthkool (just to know for the record): did you purchase this Windows 7 media in a boxed version or did you download it and burned a DVD?

If you purchased as a boxed version, the media was "stamped". If you downloaded and burned it to a DVD, then we are possibly looking at data corruption.

Both ways.... the solution would still apply... test on another computer.... if you get the same error.... this would rule out the variable that your computer is bad and would definitely point to the DVD media or the DVD reader as bad .

Thanks captainreiss...... I've seen you around and participated with you in a few questions... You understand how most of us are here just to help other people and our only reward is that every day we sign off learning something......I appreciate your words.
