The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How to turn on/off Wireless LAN

Tags: turn, wireless, radio, off
Hi,

I am trying to turn on/off the wireless LAN on a XDA IIs, through a Win32 application for Windows CE 4.20.
I can discover the NDIS driver and scan the existing networks, but I cannot turn the radio ON and OFF.

Does anyone know how can I do this?

Cheers,
Eduardo

According to the specification, sending an OID_802_11_DISASSOCIATE will cause the radio to turn OFF.  It should remain that way until another command like OID_802_11_SSID or OID_802_11_BSSID is sent.

04.05.2005 at 06:39AM PDT, ID: 13706955
It should cause the radio to turn OFF, but it doesn't.
I have set OID_802_11_DISASSOCIATE with DeviceIoControl and it returns S_OK, but if I come back to Start > Settings > Connections > WLAN, the Wireless LAN is still ON with a Status of Connected to network.

I've tried to use the WZCSAPI (Wireless Zero Configuration System API), but I don't have Microsoft Windows CE Platform Builder 4.2.

1) WZC, if running, is likely to turn the radio back on as a part of its normal operations.  If you really want the radio off, stop WZC.

2) If DISASSOCIATE does not turn the radio off, then the driver is in error.  Contact the manufacturer of the wireless device for an update.

If all else fails, you should be able to disable the hardware device itself which should, as a byproduct of disabling the card, disable the radio also.  See the SDK for SetupDi... functions.  I think there is a DDK sample demonstrating this functionality also.

04.06.2005 at 01:45AM PDT, ID: 13714809
How can I now that WZC is running? How can I stop WZC? Is there any programmatically way to do this?

04.06.2005 at 08:54AM PDT, ID: 13718209
To stop WZC I have set Flags to 0x000008 and Keep to 0x000000 (both REG_DWORD) in HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\ZeroConfig.

Once it seems I've stopped WZC, I come back to the Wireless LAN Manager and there's no SSID, no Channel, no BSSID and no MAC, but Status is still "Connecting to network.", TX Rate is "Auto" and Mode is "Infrastructure".

Then, I've tried to DISASSOCIATE but the "Wireless LAN ON" check box is still checked.
I'm sure I've got the latest version of the driver.

Hi there, to turn on/off the radio:
  load the iPAQUtil.dll
  use iPAQSetWLANRadio(true);//true on, false off
and thats it.

Hi EngelTier,

How can I get iPAQUtil DLL? Is there any available URL to download this file?

Cheers

Sorry, my device is an XDA IIs (HTC). I can't use iPAQUtil on it.

I have solved this question like this:

     CEDEVICE_POWER_STATE state = D4;
     hr = SetDevicePower( TEXT( "{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006}\\TIACXWLN1" ), POWER_NAME, state );

This turns off the Wireless LAN radio. To turn it on, just change state value to D0.

opanza, I am trying to do the same thing in C#, but the wireless radio won't turn on/off.  Perhaps I got the wrong associated class?  Here is the link to my question in the C# section:  http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Programming_Languages/C_Sharp/Q_21560483.html

Can you please take a look?  Thanks.
