How to turn off startup programs

I'm memory upgrading my brother's PC and noticed that when Win98 (SE) opens it shows a windows from the 'Compressions Agent' asking if you want to compress a drive. Not a big deal, but a little annoying 'cause every time he opens Win98, he has to click on 'No', then the box closes. And if you click on 'Yes', it says that you cannot compress drive 'C' because it's FAT32!.
Is there a way to get rid of this?. I checked on 'Start'>'Settings'>'Task bar and setting'>... and there is no such program (or DriveSpace or DoubleSpace or any compression-related prog.)
How 'bout the Registry?, I could not find anything under 'Hkey_local_machine'.
TIA for any help.

I checked under system tools and didn't find an option to allow this in startup. If you run msconfig from the start/run command do you see an option to uncheck this item. Also check the autoexec.bat and config.sys but am sure it is not there, however, as long as you are in msconfig you might as well search these files for it.
I do have drivespace and compression avialable under system tools. When I clicked on drivespace it wanted to know if I wanted to invoke drivespace 3, which I indicated No, I am running 98SE also. Hope this helps a little. Dave

I must type faster then you! Ha Ha! Enjoy! Dave
JSorbie: You have been here longer then I so I am sure you know it is common courtesy to post comments in lieu of answers unless you are 110% sure you have the fix. The reason this is good is that it does not lock the question allowing other experts to participate and it also allows the questioner to accept the best comment in fixing the problem and making an award. If he/she rejects your answer then it does not stay as part of the string when it goes into the database. Enjoy! Dave

It worked, thanks!
JSorbie: I'm giving you the points and the credit - had no choice - for your reply/comment, but at the same time I agree with Dave (emery800) regarding the posting of comments and letting the questioner to try and decide who's got the answer.
Thanks to both of you and of course, thanks to EE for this EXCELLENT resource for PC help on the Internet!.

efrain12: I am interested in helping and points is not an issue with me but on this one I am going to have to inform E-E that JSorbie posted my comments as answer. Later Dave

Glad you have problem fixed and as I indicated I have reported to E-E what JSorbie did. My post prior to his/her informs you to try msconfig and uncheck if there. Its a great team willing to help here and its great your problem is fixed. E-E is aware that the answer and comment has some problems and is trying to fix it. Most of the experts at this forun you will see provide comments. Best of Luck to you efrain12!!! Enjoy! :>) Dave
Emery800 & efrain12,

Sorry for the mix up. I am new to answering questions on E E. When I opened the question your comment was not there yet emery800. And since there was a button saying post as the answer this is what I picked. The user also has the ability to reject my answer if they want to as I have done in the past. I am sure that if EE did not want this feature to be used they would not have included it. Also since your comment was not posted when I opened the question I could have not, as you say, posted your comments as the answer. Look at the time your question got posted, 1 second faster than mine. I believe this is why EE added the feature of locking answers and why it should be used. I am also not here for the points and if I have done wrong EE should fix the problem by removing the button POST AS ANSWER. I will be also be notifing EE of this to find out the proper way of posting answers to questions.

Once Again Sorry........

Thanks JSorbie! I know we posted close, and this problem of answer vs comment is one that E-E is trying to resolve, however, doesn't appear an easy one to fix. The comment I left above about common courtesy is what I was advised to use from E-E in these situations. I for one never use the answer button. For the reasons I identified above. In most cases there is not just one right answer and thus the comments are used by the majority of the experts at this forum. Sorry for the misunderstanding and E-E can fix the points on this question. Looking forward to working with you in helping others! Enjoy! Dave
Dave,

No problem. I do appreciate your comment and from now on I will answer questions as comments until EE fixes this issue. Thanks Again! Jeff
Enjoy!!! :>)
Hello everyone,

emery800, please post an answer at this question:
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/10584241/For-emery800-10562741.html

Is the ability to post an answer a 'problem' that needs to be fixed? No. It is the way the site is designed. There are some problems associated with it, but there will be problems associated with a comment only format too. Will the site change to a comment only format? I have no idea.

JSorbie's posting an answer to this question wasn't the problem anyway...

"...I'm giving you the points and the credit - had no choice -..."

efrain12, when you have about 10 minutes you should read over our Help Desk pages to get a good overview on how the site works. The Help Desk link is at the top of every page. If you have questions about that information, you can post a zero point question in the Community Support topic area (link at the bottom of every page).

When you are managing your question, be sure to carefully review your options. If an answer is posted, you can always reject it by selecting the Reject Answer option instead of Accept Answer.

Here is what your options were....

1. Accept JSorbie's proposed answer and close the question.
Select an appropriate grade for darinw's answer - higher grades do not cost more points to give so please do be fair.
[radio]A: Excellent!!
[radio]B: Good!
[radio]C: Average.
[radio]D: Barely acceptable.

2. Reject JSorbie's proposed answer and reopen the question to other experts.
[radio]Reject this answer. (Please leave a comment explaining why the answer is unsatisfactory)

.....so, option 2 would have been the appropriate choice.

I am curious about your choice of a B grade. Why a B? Remember, the Experts are here working to help you fix your problem. For their efforts, they get the points you assigned multiplied by the grade (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1). If your problem is solved directly (as it appears in this case) you should generally give an A grade to show your appreciation. If you are going to give less than an A grade, you should tell the Expert prior to assigning it to give them a chance to provide you with the information you feel is lacking that will cause the lower grade. Most Experts strive for straight A's.

Always grade with an eye towards how the solution addressed your problem, not how you feel/felt about having the problem or how troublesome the solution may be (or if it was impossible to solve). In most cases, the Experts have little control over how the problem must be fixed - they didn't write the software, operating system, rules, etc...

JSorbie, I have pasted in our guidelines on posting answers below. I'd say in this case you made no mistake in posting an answer. It appears that you didn't make it back to the question until a day after posting your answer. In the future, you will probably want to monitor the question for a few minutes after posting an answer/comment so that you can respond to the poster if they have an immediate response to your post (or to other Experts as in this case). Had you of done that in this thread, you could have withdrawn your proposed answer.

The guidelines:

Number one. It pays to carefully read the thread of the question. That will prevent you from posting an answer that has already been suggested or tried.  It also may give you the insight to post the right answer that the other experts have missed.  You should not post as an answer something that is already suggested in a comment.

Number two. We are all human. Some people will be having a bad day and may not maintain the most professional of demeanors. That is going to happen so my advice is to always keep in mind that the written medium can be the most difficult one to express one's thoughts with.

Number three. If you aren't confident that your answer will solve the problem, post it as a comment.

Number four. If you are confident that your answer will solve the problem and has not been posted previously as a comment by another Expert, post it as an answer.

Number five. Some topic areas move very fast and you must post as an answer if you hope to ever get points in that queue. I think the C++ topic area is like that. Experts there will post an answer of 'Answer coming' and then post a comment following that with the answer. Other topic areas move a lot slower and some of the experts have adopted a policy of posting comments only until the customer indicates who should post for the points. You will have to feel you way through this one.

Our policy (EE's) is stated in #3 and #4.

I gave it a B grade because, even thought the general solution to my problem was in MSCONFIG, I had to do my homework in this utility by digging into the several files it opens and decide on how to proceed ( I even had to make a backup of those files just in case this was NOT the solution ).
An answer with an "A" grade would have had direct instructions like:"In Autoexec.bat" type a "REM" at the beginning of...; DO NOT ERASE THAT LINE, then reboot. Problem should be gone".
As a suggestion, I'd say that, to make grading simple, just give the choices of: "ACCEPT" (it worked) or
"REJECT" (it did not).
Thanks.
I can't post an answer until the present proposed answer is retracted or rejected! Thanks Dave
Forget it I see you have taken care of it, a little confusing for my size head! Ha Ha! Enjoy the fourth all of you! Dave
