enable run from address bar

It seems that IE5.5 disables the running of programs from the address bar. Where can I enable this feature. I'm sure there is some kind of registry key or something. By the way I run Win2K just incase there is a specific policy, etc. to this OS.

I have not heard this to be a problem with Windows 2000.  Have you tried (just in case), within IE 5.5 clearing the temp files, history files using tools - internet options - general?

Check the area for Installing over Windows 2000 arena.

Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 Before Upgrading to Windows 2000

Windows 2000 contains an earlier version of Internet Explorer components. When upgrading from Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT to Windows 2000, we recommend that you uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 before the upgrade

Sorry, meant to include this.

Here's one more link I've found helpful, and includes access to others using 5.5 and 'voices'.

Next, and last, is the IE 5.5 SCRIPT detail.

Listening further>  I noticed in your profile you "just know stuff"; clever.

You said you're having a tough time running programs from your address bar, details and particulars are appreciated to minimize guessing games.  What programs, how do you attempt to execute the run .... again, details please, if still unresolved at this point.

Thanks,

Asta
If it would allow you to run a program from the address bar, would you also expect it to honor a similar request in a link on a web page, for example <a href="format c:">commit suicide</a>

Sorry for the confusion. I too quickly assumed that this was another move to protect the average home user. First of all, what I was referring to is that I keep an address bar in my task bar via "Right Click > Toolbars > Address". From here I run executables such as cmd.exe (or simply cmd). This works for any executable that is under a directory that is specified in %path%. This also works directly from a browser address bar, but it requires a full path statement.

The problem started when I installed a Windows update followed by a reboot and an install of IE5.5 followed by a reboot. I then noticed that typing a command would result in a browser opening and trying to resolve a URL.

The problem has gone away. It could have been bad cache, temp file, etc. as others offered, but I do not know. I thought that this was simply a new feature that would prevent someone from running an executable that they did not intend to run.
This question has a deletion request Pending
Excuse me, why is this a pending deletion; specifics that would resolve such issues were included.  Please expound.
Bad file, bad path, corruption somewhere, etc.... the clearing of the cache, temp int files, errors of cross-linked files, problems that are 'interim' to reboot, etc.  All can cause this type of anomolie, no?  At any rate, that is why I was on this 4 minutes after your posting with the resolution that normally resolves this here; so again, why would you delete this question vs. close with a thanks and an A; given it was resolved?

I'm a person who spends much of her little available time here helping and learning along the way.  I have a concern when solutions are provided and questions are suddenly pending deletion.  If you were in my shoes, I can't believe you'd feel any differently.  But then....always learning new things.  These comments in the way of explaining where I was coming from in my prior comments, in case that was unclear.  Prior to finding this excellent site, I would spend many dollars to get this level of assistance, and you spent nothing; again an attribute of this site.  If I've missed the boat, so to speak, please do edify me.

Drat, that submit button.  Also noticed that although you've been here since February, you've only found help to the tune of "C" level.  And that you have a second item pending deletion (you posted a Windows 2000 question in the Windows NT Networking area and is pending deletion).  This further makes me ask you these questions.

The bottom line is this:  Many of us are here to help and learn along the way.  The value of this site is substantial, one of the best.  What I believe makes this one of the best is integrity in the process and bringing questions asked to a logical and complete solution.  Thus, also posting the solutions.  If you check my own profile, you will find that I've asked many questions here the past almost 2 years, and that I always pay for my help and award people with As because 1) it costs me no more than a B or C, and 2)  I feel at the very least this shows that I appreciate their time and effort and lastly 3) people will be inclined to come help me in the future when I meet up with another critical situation and truly need expeditious and quality help as I've found here.

These are all just me and my own personal opinions, I can speak for no one else.  But, I would betray my own spirit and being if I did not tell you who I am and where I'm coming from.

Have a good Sunday.

Sorry, I posted then resolved the myself that night. By the way, I can refute each proposed answer.

1. I had already tried all of that prior to posting thinking that perhaps it had been added as an option, etc..

2. No mention of the problem at all.

3. I am not upgrading. Besides, I am working with 100% dynamic disks (no 98 or other).

4. <see below>

5. Sorry, I just assumed that anyone who could answer this question would be familiar with the ability to run commands from the task bar similiar to doing so directly from a command prompt. You can pass parameters... just like a prompt.

As for #4, I had cleared the temp/cache, checked options, and rebooted a few times. What I was referring to does not require a browser to be opened; it is a feature of the browser embedded into the OS. While it is possible that the temp/cache still could cause problems, I don't believe it was. This is because I the problem went away even after leaving the temp/cache alone for awhile. I suspect that after a complete power-down the system returned to normal.

I'm not trying to be greedy. If you feel that you deserve the points just because it may have been bad cache/temp files, tell me. I don't care, but it seems that no one is familiar with the feature that I speak of anyway.
Noticed that you are here now. Please take a look at the complexity of some of my prior questions. I ask for specifics and people go off on tangents. If the points are not enough for the questions, I would gladly give more.

For the CSC question, I resolved it myself with not a single solution offered.

The question concerning the MPII vs MPIII stemmed from a more technical question regarding strobing of the 19th-bit of the CPU reset register, specifics on voltage, FSB issues, performance degradation running a processor with a BIOS that does not support SSE, etc. Nobody could answer that--it was a hard question. I have since resolved all of that as well. Anyway the link supplied ended up to be a 6hr research. Also, I had already been to that site and was going to go back anyway, but I offered the points because that specific site did end up *helping* resolve the issue.
I wish no points here, thank you.
One person's complexity is another's knowledge; I claim no level of expertise.  I find that the more I learn, the more knowledge there is to be learned.  We all appear to benefit in the process, not only in terms of the technical aspects or jargon, but in the more difficult realm and that of trying to see behind the words.  This is all too often, the roadblock.  I'm sure you get my gist.

I've been here nerely two years and I have what I deem to be very complex issues.... and .... I've never given anyone a "C" grade, yet you have.

Part of life's beauty is the diversity we find, as well as part of the other side which may not be as clearly defined.  I do not blame or mean to show you any disrespect.  I can only share my feelings, that is what this lady is doing here.

I never want anyone to give me anything that they do not feel I deserve.  So, hopefully I've explained myself fully.

Smiles work best for me, so in closing...

I failed to include the cause of my comments in the first place.  You posted the question at 12:51 and I answered at 12:55 to clear cache/temp int files/history files, etc.  That was 4 minutes later .... ????
astaec has made a very good case; I feel she deserves selecting her comment as an answer and awarding an A.  If you still disagree, then go ahead and delete the question (you will need to do that again, because the earlier deletion was cancelled by these comments).
Thank you, singleton.  I was feeling like quite a jerk (or should I say jerkette) for my sensitivity.  It's not like I can go buy a loaf of bread with this for my family, but I was truly questioning my own mind's eye.  Some things feel right, some don't.  This one didn't.

And thank you for pointing out that LogicLoader will need to take additional action to re-start the deletion process.

I may be getting old, but my memory does still work quite well, and I always see with each new day how little I know and how much there is to learn.

I agree. Some questioners seem to treat things as if they were spending real money.  Best thing is to just avoid their questions in the future.
Yup, sadly so.  There's a new saying I just learned "what goes around comes around".  Quite applicable.  Off to cook dinner (finally).

Here, here... you deserve it. It seems you have put much effort in attempting to track down the possibilities. Besides, it must have been some kind of need for a reboot, or several to progressively clear out whatever some temp/cached data as you stated. Just one of those little pesky things probably caused by the residue of multiple updates right in a row.
So much for dinner; my husband is working diligently on a construction priority here, and I'm recovering from yet another power failure.

Thanks, LogicLoader and again, Singleton.  Life's short ... time well spent. Bottom line met, and I feel appreciated.

As regards future efforts, should you need help again, I'll do what I've done here, try like mad to get it resolved.  The added benefit, is that through all, I learn; not only the technological aspect, but about people .... the real key.
