PCMCIA depending on the card can provide internet connectivity. But not exclusively. It all depends on the PCMCIA or PC Card if you will. As I stated above....Please read before doubling up on information.
Are you enquiring about a particular laptop that takes PCMCIA? If you have a need for an expansion card, be sure to get PCMCIA and not the newer CardBus. An older laptop's manual will specify PCMCIA. A newer laptop can take the newer CardBus type as well. Alas, both types are physically the same so you just have to read the manual and labels carefully. If unsure, please tell the exact brand and model of the laptop in question and someone here can check for you.
pcmcia is an association which published the now obsolete standard of connecting peripheral devices to portable copmuters via a 16 bit bus. It has been replaced by the 32 bit cardbus. Just search any retail dealers to see the many cards available.

No, I'm sorry, that is incorrect, as Wakeup has already explained, there are numerous uses for PCMCIA besides being a modem for a laptop...where do you get all this incorrect information from kumar?
The old-style PCMCIA cards are as indicated by public running on a 16bit bus and are basically an extension of ISA, with all the IRQ conflicts, etc to be expected thereof. Cardbus/PCCard is still used, but for onboard modems/lan in laptops it is being slowly pushed out by MiniPCI cards that are integrated into the laptop design. These cards can also be used as harddrive controllers for "naked" laptop harddrives, media card readers (CompactFlash usually), and many many other uses...

-Pcmcia card is as simple as you can imagine, its just an expansion slot for your notebook as WAKEUP said
-it is made specially just for notebook for space saving
-u can plug anything to you notebook through the PCMCIA slot if you have an expansion card for it
-the card could be USB2.0/Ethernet Card/Wireless Lan Card/56k Modem and so forth
