Actually windows update does not send information to MS. It just keeps the updates you have on a list and compares it with itself. If you know the updates you have and the updates you need you can even find them on www.download.com or microsoft's download site

r u talking about automatic updates?
it is the same as windowsupdate.microsoft.com (manual).
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en

Few updates are available at Microsoft download page.
The best way is to use the windows update for corporate user

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/fr/default.asp?corporate=true

Campasha is correct. Updating sends no information to MS, except for a list of your drivers (so they can be updated too), your OS version, and what updates you have already installed. No personally identifiable information is ever sent, ever.

That said, the only reason you would not want to update via MS is if you have an illegal copy of Windows, as they can detect that and disable it. If this is the case, then no comment. If not, then feel free to use Windows Update, as it's completely safe.
I don't think they can detect it(Not that I have used an illegal copy).  what is an illegal copy in your terms? ie. using multiple key codes???

windowsupdate.microsoft.com  would do the updates just fine.
They can detect some, but not all. It's mostly for the users who have exploited usage of the XP Enterprise edition. They have a bank of registration keys that have violated this usage, and if yours matches, they can disable your computer until you call to activate (and thereby require payment) or format your hard drive. It's in the EULA at least.
Hmmm...Okay never mind I forgot I was in the XP section, yeah in that case. My bad.
