802.11a & 802.11b

Hi,

I recently (mistakenly!) bought a Wireless Access Point 802.11a and a USB Wireless Adapter 802.11b.

So far I have only heard everyone saying that the two are not compatible. I have no means for exchanging/ returning the items.  Is there anyway I can make the two work with each other or do I have to buy a compatible Adapter or a access point?

thnx,
sg

sgaucho ... as you can see: https://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Handhelds_Wireless/M_776763.html
you haven't been too generous with grades given.
Please don't take offense but I think you should have graded A on this  one at least.
The fact that you bought incompatible hardware doesn't make my answer less accurate.
That's not about points or grade (so I won't ask for the question to be reopened), but please reconsider the way you're grading. I think I provided you reasons why the two equipments are incompatible,  a reason why the only logical workaround won't work and a link to a very well documented comparison.

Hi Kronos,

I had researched quite a bit regarding the difference between 802.11a and 802.11b before posting it here. The reason for posting here was to be doubly sure with regards to the incompatibility which I am now.
I awarded all the points to u and also graded your comment as Good not average. In my opinion, Excellent should be awarded when one has a specific problem and obtains the right solution for it. However, I might be wrong too!
In anycase, will definitely think twice before grading the answer the next time around!
Cheers,

As long as we're giving out opinions, let me share mine...

Question: Is there anyway I can make the two work with each other or do I have to buy a compatible Adapter or a access point?
Answer: No.  You have to buy a compatible Adapter or AP.
The above addresses your question exactly as you asked it.

Kronos Answer:
They are incompatible for lots of reasons, but first because 802.11a works in 5GHz frequency while 802.11b works in 2.4GHz.
Band converters can be found on the market, in order to "move" the 2.4GHz transmission/reception  in %GHz band, but this won't help since the data packets are different.
So , you are out of luck. You have to buy either 2 802.11a products either 802.11b (b+ and g are compatible with b standard).

However, Kronos answered your question above and beyond, providing you with a link and explanations.  None of which you asked for.

So, in my humble opinion, your rationality holds no ground.  You had a specific problem for which Kronos fixed.  Your specific problem was you couldn't figure out for yourself that you bought incompatible hardware.  The specific solution Kronos provided you with was the knowledge as to why not, backed by links and even an offering of further knowledge by telling you a little about the other 802.11 standards that are compatible.

Kronos should have received an A+ for his above and beyond efforts.

So, to ramble on even more, by your rationality no one could have received anything above a B grade for this question.  So, before I answer any of your questions, I'll expect a chart detailing what type of question it is and what type of grade you'll be giving for that specific question.  This way I know if it's worth my effort...because I know the whopping 50 points you offered didn't convince Kronos to come running.
Thank you Ruprex .... you're too kind.  :D
Not at all, just saying it as I see it. ;-)
