I have followed microsofts(!?!?) instructions and have been unable to complete this job - if anyone can help then please let me know.
This is the situation:
I have a windows 2000 domain with one domain server which does everything including exchange.
I wish to bring a second server into the domain to provide some redundancy and allow me to rebuild the 1st machine as it is due for a rebuild.
To do this I have built a windows 2003 server as a standalone. I have run adprep /forestprep successfully and then adprep /domainprep on the windows 2000 machine whilst it is disconnected from the network.
No errors - no issues (that I can see)
The next stage is to run the roles wizard on the 2003 and change the role of the 2003 box to be a domain controller - it lets me run through the whole wizrd and I can browse and select the 2000 domain controller when requested but it all stops with an error:
"This operation failed because
The active directory installation requires domain configuration changes. Run adprep /domainprep ........etc etc
...and then proceed with the active directory installation
The server is unwilling to process your request"
I have had a look around at these type of problems and have seen two which although do not have this error, seem vagualy similar. One says ensure that you are using the correct priviliges and security information. This I am doing. The second said ensure you have delegation from the windows 2000 controller - I have given both the 2003 machine and the administrators this delegation.
Do you think that this could be something to do with exchange server 2000 on the win2k box?
My next stage will be to either upgarde the 2000 box to 2003 and then try it or build another box as 2000 and try and bring that into the domain both I would like to avoid as they are long processes with no guarantee that they will work.
Please help if you can
Thanks
Chris
