Expert Notify Question

Hi Everyone,

This "question" is for the Experts in the MS Access TA.  The idea behind it is to allow an easy means of getting other Experts and the TA PE to look at something or discuss something.

It's a "notify* question in the sense that you only *subscribe* to the question, but *don't* post any comments.  When one of us wants to communicate with the others, post a new comment that might look something like this:

Subject: Expert Topic - Member needs help with a tough one

"Member xyz needs help.  Please see

<link>

Jim Dettman
Expert MS Access TA"

All of us will then receive an e-mail and can click on the link to find out what needs to be done or talked about.  Please do *not* post comments in this notify question.    I've created one link so you can see what I'm talking about.

Feel free to use this to talk about any Expert issues or items that are specific to the MS Access TA.  Keep in mind that anyone will be able to see these questions (both members and Experts).  When creating your question topic, make sure you use "Expert Topic" at the start of the question title.  This will make it easy for everyone to spot these questions.

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to let everyone know that I've been very scarce of late because my mom's been in the hospital.  I haven't had much of a chance to do anything and even when I do, I'm limited by a poor dialup connection.

I expect she’ll be in for several more days, so I probably won’t surface until the end of next week.

Take care everyone,
Jim.

hey, I'm proud to split points with this crowd any day of the week!!
The questioner needs a full-text search engine in Access.  I have no clue.  :)  I probably could get something working with just one keyword, but somehow I'm pretty sure this is going to get ALOT more complicated.

 Andrew,

Please do not post comments on this question unless you have a link to a problem question or another question thread to point to.

We want to try and keep this meaningfull.  If everyone starts posting general comments, then we end up with a lot of notify e-mails that mean nothing and then folks start ignoring them (this is what happened in the PE TA).

Everyone else keep in mind that you don't need to post a comment in order to subscribe to a question.

Im out of ideas on this one regarding reports spontaneously changing sizes:

Hi All,

  This one is a repost:

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20943765/Filtering-thru-Data-Files.html

I've had an off-line conversation Lady Dev and posted the results of that and I think we can move foreward now on this one.  Everyone please have a look at it.

I picked it up thinking I could handle it, but it's dragged out and my mom's heading for surgery on wed (I'm leaving for Buffalo tomorrow), so I'll be absent again for a few days and I'm not sure that I'd be able to complete this.

Plus I'm certainly not an expert on the treeview control by any strech having used it only twice<g>

Last item, within the next week  I will be starting up some converstations on some Expert do's and don'ts.  I'll be looking foreward to everyones input on these topics as they affect us all.  The end result will be a mini-training manual for new Experts.  Some of this is already on the help pages, but I don't think it will hurt to talk about some issues that have come up recently.

Hope all of you are doing well and enjoyed the Easter Holiday.

I'll be passing on that one JD.  AW and I tried to answer her poorly stated goals and she got pissy with us.

But I thank you for the assist.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Walter

I think the goals are now a little more clearly stated.  I also think there is a little more understanding on the part of LadyDev that it's not quite so clear on the Expert side of what someone is asking for in all cases.

I hope that we can convince her that EE is worth it.

Jim.
walter - I am choosing to stay out of that one.

=============================================

Can understand that.  There is a lot she wants to accomplish.  I don't thin the whole thing needs to be handled under that one question, but at least we need to get here started.

I plan to work on it latter (time allowing).

Note - this question has long history.

Bit stuck for time at the moment for this one, started with all good intentions, it's one of those roll-over questions, the guy is polite and patient, recognises the scope increase, but it is becoming more of a job than a question. I'm thinking that the entire logic needs to be re-thunk.

I don't see a way to do it through an single SQL statement, and I do not have the time this week to dedicate to coding a sub for him.

This question should not have been closed and it certainly does not belong in the PAQ's as it's meant strictly as a notification method for getting Experts attention.

Plus, I want my points back.  It shouldn't cost me question points to do my job as a PE.

Please re-open this question.  If that can't be done, then I'll open a new notify thread.

Question Title: How do I create a "dynamic" ADODB recordset in Access?
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21071340/How-do-I-create-a-dynamic-ADODB-recordset-in-Access.html

I know it's in the VB DB area, but everything's being done in Access.  The asker is trying to open one of 11 reports, populate it, then email it/them to the appropriate person/people.  Not extrememly difficult, but my "real" work has been keeping me from being able to put time and effort into this.

I solved his original question, and I'll be following along with the current one, so I'll be there to help, just not as much as I'd like to.

Thanks.

Howdy all,

Last week I posted a message about the new EE program.  As I said, I wasn't trying to exclude anyone.  My only reason for starting with the top 15 is so I wouldn't get a on slought right off the bat.

Hi All!

Just a reminder that you should not be working on databases off-line in the course of answering a question.

I was recently made aware of a situation where a member was consistently asking a question, then quickly offering up the database for the Expert to work on.  Thus in effect getting an app written for free.

This goes against site guidelines.  All exchanges should take place on the site.  In *rare* cases, it may be required that you look at a MDB to determine the problem, but this should only be done after you having thoroughly discussed it with the questioner.  In general, these situations should happen very rarely.

When it does happen, the solution should appear on the site.  Under *no* circumstances should you be sending a MDB to someone and then post on the site "it's fixed".  This diminishes the effectiveness of the PAQ's.

Sorry to bother you with this, but it looks like capricorn1 doesn't "cooperate" with me anymore after a discussion about a question with little knowledgebase value where he started calling me names.
I also ran into several questions where he posted similar comments as other experts without referencing to those comments and thus in violation of https://www.experts-exchange.com/help.jsp#hi242

Four requests from me to discuss this matter in the Community Support area have been ignored.

No problem for me as I can cope with this behaviour, I'm just concerned others might be suffering from this non-cooperative behaviour too so I've informed our Page Editor JDettman and only want to ask you to contact Jim when you run into the same "trouble".

Cheers and keep up the good work :-)

Nic;o)
So what names did he call you?

/gustav
I don't think that's relevant gustav, just wanted to inform you and the other experts to contact Jim when running into a similar situation. I value the cooperation between experts highly and I'm not only sorry to see this happening, but very disappointed that he doesn't want to discuss this "off topic" in a CS question. Thus my posting here to inform the others.

Wow.  All that for a C.
Those are the kind of posts I find the most difficult to follow up and finish to the askers satisfaction, sometimes it is just not popssible for them to accept anything and once it goes bad in their mind there is no turning them back. I am hardly one for espousing moderation but I *try* to ectricate myself from impossib;le situations by suggesting that perhaps another Expert can help them, whether I am *right* or not I am too easily sucked in.

Steve
With a question like that, I wouldn't jump in even if asked, since it appears that Routinet covered the question, and it could be construed as point hogging.

I'm interpreting this as the asker had some mental block which prevented him from implimenting Routinet's solution, as the answer wasn't 'do my work for me' enough for him, so he basically bailed on his own question with a C grade.

I don't think there would be too much problems with going to CS and requesting a grade change.
Yeah, that's in process.  Hogging, schmogging...SOMEBODY give that boy some help!  :þ
I am with routinet this one, somtimes there is nothing that can be done, fortunately I come across this quite rarely.
... unofficial clarification...

With a question like that, I wouldn't jump in even if asked, since it appears that Routinet covered the question, and it could be construed as point hogging, and I just don't have the patience to review 57 iterations of asker Q/expert A to find the few select nuggets 'o knowledge that would lead the asker to a solution, or even worse have to hit the asker over the head over the nuggets that were but not implimented, or even worse verify that all facts stated are correct, and to ask for more facts that are needed to answer this question, <insert your own rant here>, and all for little to no points.

All of that while on somebody else's nickel.
<change of subject>

I'm asking a series of questions in the Adobe Acrobat TA https://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Graphics/Adobe_Acrobat/ surrounding the ability to create Access reports in .pdf that includes editable fields where these .pdf reports can be emailed to users, they enter data in them, email them back to me, and I import this user-edited data back into my Access database.

If anyone wants to learn how to do this, or if you already know and want to pick up some Adobe Acrobat TA expert points, feel free to monitor this TA.

I've posted here purely to "notify" the experts.
Only RoutineT has posted on the other thread - so none of the others would get an alert mail.
