That share is automatically created for the system by the system.
If you wish to access that share, you would need to create an additional share of the same root drive.
The C$ share is accessed by the system only and permission settings can not be changed.
The share also can not be deleted or disabled...it will be created again at each log on
You should be able to get in.  When it asks you for a username/password, in the username area, include the name of the remote computer.

So, if the computer you are on is called LOCAL and the one you want to get into is called REMOTE, do this:

Start -->  Run

\\REMOTE\C$

When the username / password box comes up, enter: REMOTE\administrator for the username and then the password for the administrator account on the remote machine.  That should work fine.

Good luck.

What am I doing wrong
Are you trying to connect to it via a Windows 98 computer?
try this, it may work, it may not..

unshare the c drive, reshare it.  I think this works, but I can't remember..
Windows 98 doesn't let you change the username, but Windows XP or 2000 will.
Even better thing to do...

Start Windows Explorer on your computer. Then go to Tools->MapNetwork Drive. If this is not an option then you could alternatively right click on Network Neighborhood and click on 'Map Network Drive'.

Then enter REMOTE\c$ (replace REMOTE with the name of the remote machine). Map the drive as anything you wish (Eg. S drive). The click on the little link on the same window which reads 'Coonect using a different username'. Then put in the remote machines Administrators username and pwd. Hit OK and OK again.

The remtoe drive should be shared by now.

If you're working in a domain and trying to use the domain admin account to do this then all you need to do on your computer is use the 'runas' option and start Internet Explorer as the domain admin. You can then browse any machine on the domain by simply putting \\REMOTE\c$ in the address bar.

If these machines have been locked down by someone else then it might be that these shares are disabled. In that case you need to make a few registry hacks before being able to connect to those shares. Chances are that this is not the case.

to create a new share:

- go into the sharing options for whatever drive/folder you want to share (eg. open up My Computer -> right click on your hard disk -> click on sharing and security)
- click on the new share button down at the bottom right
- Enter in a share name
- click permissions if u want to set permissions otherwise just click ok
- then click ok

Hello,

If you want to, you can disable the windows automatic shares permanently (or until you manual change it back) by doing the following:

-click start > run > type in 'regedit' and hit enter
-navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
-create, or set if they already exist, the two keys AutoShareServer and AutoShareWks to 0 (they should be REG_DWORD type)
-the next time you reboot, you will no longer have the shares enabled.

Caution: Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) and Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) use the administrative share, but if this is a home computer you will not have these running, and it is ok to disable them, if this is a work computer, check if these services are in use first.

However, if your goal is to access these shares then go with nauman_ahmed's comment, he is correct, because the simple file sharing forces remote users attempting to access the shares to authenticate as guest, and administrator access is required to access administrative shares, you must disable it as he says.

Your problem is solved as Nauman Ahmed said two post before this. You are able to connect to the share but you have to specify a valid username. In order to let the system specify the user name disable Simple File Sharing as Mr. Nauman says.
Remember to spify domain name or even localhost name if you have some problems in this way:

DOMAIN\Domain_username
COMPUTERNAME\localusername

Hope this helps!

I'm having a similar problem.  I cannot connect to \\LAPTOP\c$.  First, it couldn't be found at all.  I turned off the built in Firewall on the remote (LAPTOP) machine.  I try to connect again.  Now I am presented with a dialog box that only allows me to log in as LAPTOP/guest.  I cannot change the user, only the password (which I don't know and I don't care to know, since I'm trying to connect as ADMINISTRATOR).  I've followed MANY online examples that say to disable Simple File Sharing.  Unfortunately (as strange as it sounds) this is NOT an option for me.  I know where that option is SUPPOSED to be, but it is NOT there.  It is an option on 3 out of 4 of my WinXP SP2 machines, but not on the LAPTOP machine to which I'm trying to connect.  I've also tried setting forceguest = 0 in the registry, but even after a reboot, nothing.  I still cannot connect to \\LAPTOP\c$

Can anyone offer some advanced help?
What do you see when you browse to My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View? What is the very last option in this window?

-Nauman.
I have the same problem.  My very last option is:  "Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items"

Any ideas?
Then my friend, you must be using XP home edition.  The option of turning off simple file sharing was left out of the home version of XP.
Your best bet would to open a new question in the xp topic area and someone there could give you some advice... good luck
